I would definitely add my Corsa to the list (petrol 45mpg), and partners Hyundai i30 (diesel 55+mpg and 15yrs old).
However, once I've paid for my Mog (early next year) I'm probably going to swap the Corsa for an old, rust prone, uneconomic MGB GT. More fun to drive, cheaper to fix and reduced insurance/tax.
If I wanted to go for a second hand EV for a comparable price (sub £5K) I'd be looking at a old Nissan Leaf with a sub 50mile range, so impossible to get to work and back.....

''The NEXO fleet represents the first deployment of fully certified, ADR-approved Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) in Australia and the first use of hydrogen vehicles by a Government in Australia The arrival of NEXO on ACT roads is the first realisation of Hyundai’s and the ACT Government’s long-term commitment to developing a hydrogen economy in Australia A total of 20 zero-emission Hyundai NEXO hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles have been registered and are set to hit the road in March as part of the ACT government fleet.
The NEXO fleet represents the first deployment of fully certified, ADR-approved Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) in Australia, as well as the first use of hydrogen vehicles by a Government in Australia.''
The arrival of NEXO on ACT roads is a milestone in the march towards a new era of vehicle transport, further developing opportunities for a hydrogen economy in Australia.''NEXO has a range of 666km (WLTP), with a refueling time of three to five minutes, in an SUV that emits only water vapour from its exhaust and purifies the air as it drives.
With drive from a near-silent electric drivetrain, NEXO creates far less external noise than a conventional vehicle, which is an especially important benefit in urban environments.
NEXO features the latest autonomous driving capabilities and is extremely safe, as the first FCEV to score the ANCAP maximum five-star safety rating.''
The refuel time put EV's to shame! and it purifies the air as its driven!
I have seen the vehicles and also the Toyota Mirai which looks a lot nicer in my opinion. I like the idea of Hydrogen and hope it takes off but really that article is a bit far fetched. The ACT government filling station is near where I generally fill up with petrol so would be convenient if I was allowed to use it. Based on local ACT Government blurb it is 100% Solar powered from panels on the roof and being advertised as totally green hydrogen to help the ACT reach zero green house emissions by 2025, but the truth is it only generates enough Hydrogen to will two cars a day so the greedy Government is only allowing their 20 cars to use it and will not share it. and will not let us as the general public buy Hydrogen cars We were told a few years ago we would be allowed to buy them in 2021 but we still can't buy the cars and even if we could there is nowhere we can buy Hydrogen from. To me it feels like the ACT government is trying to make me and the other people who live here feel guilty for driving petrol cars but not giving a lot of incentives to drive anything else. Not that the other states are any better, some have even introduced a 2.5cent per km tax on electric cars to cover lose of revenue from petrol excise. More about the Hydrogen cars we are not allowed to buy. Although at the current cost and lease conditions I would stick to driving my Petrol car for now. https://www.drive.com.au/news/true-...les-cost-taxpayers-close-to-100000-each/

Great article and I feel is probably closer to the truth. I have been thinking about my Frontline MGB. The workshop told me that about 500KG of body, front subframe, diff housing etc. is used from the old car. A tonne of steel generates 1.8Tonne of CO2 to make, so my car is reusing 900kg of CO2. Petrol creates 2.31KG per litre so I can use 390 litres to break even. At 7L/100km that gives me another 5500km. But as that article highlights that is ignoring the CO2 used to make the 390 Litres like other comparisons have done. Probably not enough to really make much difference between using a MGB to make a frontline compared to buying a new MX5 but I am still looking forward to my car being finished and hearing the Throttle bodies

If they can get 20 years out Tow vehicles and Transits, we're going to be well into 2050 before we see any significant reduction. By that time, synthetic fuels will be affordable and the ICE engine will be back in favour...... Its becoming a bit like Fashion, mini skirts are in, maxi skirts are in, bell bottoms are in. Diesel will give more mileage so reduce emissions, diesel is dirty, buy BEV...... Just give me the research on that one please. As a separate item I am also convinced that we need more noise from EVs as a matter of pedestrian safety. There should be some sort of sound emitter that works up to any urban maximum speed, say 70 kph, and not that annoying hair drier whine either Even with the current rules they are too quiet. It should be made law that retro fitting is required and subject to MOT inspection. This comes from someone who nearly finished under an EV the other day while stepping aside to pass a parked car on a narrow lane. If we go down that route we need to allow for the unaware dipsticks that walk around with earphones in/cans on issue as well. A good blip of the Coupes V8 through the sidepipes usually makes them clear the floor by a couple of inches. Little else takes them out of their odd insular world. Perhaps 5G can be used to make their headphones send a message when they are walking down the middle of the road paying no attention. A klaxon and someone screaming "get out of the sodding way" would be good. We had a neighbour down the hill purchase a new Mustang MachE electric thing. I hear him whine gently past the window at 7.30 each morning. At first I had no idea what the noise was so waited one morning to find out. I do feel slightly awkward taking the Coupe out of the garage in the morning due to the impact on the neighbours, so I guess the additional of a small droning noise is a good thing. Peter, on the eTransit range and charging thing, they do get lunchhours! They may have to do 130 items per day but they are given (45mins) for lunch still. I think that the LEVC London Taxi has gone down reasonably well with the cabbies using a range extender model, it would seem like the best solution? I see Honda and Nissan going down this series hybrid route now.

Perhaps the Mustang 'safety noise' could be chinking milk bottles ... take us back to the early mornings of our childhood ... until we got up and scared ourselves shitless by looking in the bathroom mirror 😄

It is all very well having batteries that can be quickly charged but putting, for example, 60kWh into a battery in 10 mins requires both high voltage and amperage. Just where is that combination of voltage and amperage available outside heavy industrial establishments? Certainly nowhere near where people live.
The answer is hydrogen, to replace diesel road transport and light vehicles and leave gasoline for the 5% who drive for fun...bikers, sports car owners and powerboats.

Hydrogen is certainly part of the answer, but for many folks like us, BEV is the perfect solution. We can charge at home from our solar panels, we hardly ever do long journeys (and if we did they'd be largely on motorways so no shortage of charge points), and the simplicity and low cost compared to HFCEV is significant. I rather like not having to go and find a filling station every few days, being able to come home, plug in and knowing that we're fully charged ready to go in the morning is hugely convenient for us.

I was speaking to a friendly electric owner at work the other day, Kia EV GT just arrived. He shared some of his experiences. Ionity 350Kw? Apparently not. So the 350Kw will be if your car has a 350Kw acceptance capability. As long as it is from 20-80% and before the CPU throttles everything or melts your battery? Unless it's cold. Or hot. As long as there is not someone in the adjacent charger in which case the 350Kw to the unit gets shared and you get 170Kw? https://www.greencarreports.com/new...ng-350-kw-connectors-150-kw-just-as-fastHe did not have buyers regret but he did find it a little half-baked.
