Pembleton T24 is an open two-seater but without a soft top.

The wife had 5 cabriolets versions over the years. Later versions with the hotter engines could be good fun, being rear engined you were in good company with Porsches

You could well be right. I just saw that I could still order a new one - presumably then from already built stock.

The choice out there isn't much different from when the MX5 was launched, I traded in a Triumph Stag for a new one when they first came out, from memory the rivals at the time were:
Presumably Morgans - but with a waiting list
Caterhams
Imported Alfa Spyder S4
Reliant SS1 or Tii
A merc R107 at about 4 times the price
Lotus Elan ( fwd model)

Most 2 seaters on the road at the time were old crumbly MGB / Midget or Spitfires, a leakproof reliable MX5 was a revelation.

Had to look when the MX5 was launched - 1989/90 same year the Fiat X19 was discontinued.

Just finished my Classic Car magazine and realised there is an handy section at the end with model dates of manufacture from/to

Other models around 1990. - TVR and Panther Kallister ended in 1990

The Smart Roadster is hugely impressive. Its one of those cars which looks nothing on paper, and yet delivers way more than it should. A friend ran one for a while, so I had significant passenger mileage in it.
Not without quirks but that's what makes these cars interesting.

He's now on his third Mx5 and loves it. I can see why, but it has no character.

Think Smart ended in 2019 (Ineos Grenadier bought their factory) but are due to relaunch an all electric Smart

I appreciate that these are not main stream and you need to do a bit of spanner work but don't forget the various Cobras, Jaguar C & D types + the AKSS. For real die hards there is the Ronart.

Good suggestion Reg. Some of "assembly required" Cobra replica's are good.
If we go down that route might I also suggest one of these as previously run by a known member of this parish some time back. I believe they offer a targa ?

For those of a dirty fingernail disposition Reg, well made replicas are very desirable. With space and spare money I might have become a collector of replicas. Porsche 917, GT40, Ferrari GTO, & P4. All from my days of reading Motorsport.
Plus the C Type, Cobra, and a real Ariel Atom, & Caterham.

All totally usable, but anathema to both purists and modernists grin2

The (replica) Healy's our local place handles are lovely as well.

I guess we could add the Aerial to the list of 2 seat (very) open cars as well.
