There has been much talk of Aero prices on here of late with dealers . I tried to part ex mine about a year ago for a late roadster,my car had about 38k on the clock three dealers weren't interested because of its age one dealer would need to do a full engineers report before they could even give me a ball park figure. Williams did give me a ballpark which was 9k less than i got fot it privately and you all said and I admit I sold it too cheap. The reason I was told is that many dealers had been caught out by the complexity of the older cars replacement car parts cost and the usual they have to give a warranty. Strangely though three dealers would be happy to sell it on my behalf. I think prices will rise eventually but its the pristine garage queens seem to command the price...

A car is worth what someone will pay for it, no more, no less. There is a significant difference between insured (replacement) value and sale/trade in price. I am very, very aware how much it can cost to deal with electro/mechanical problems and some wear issues. This is why I don't think my Plus 8 (46k miles) is worth anywhere near what some armchair pundits would think.

Having been in the trade all my life I can understand a dealer not wanting to get involved with selling Aeros. As we know, parts are an issue and you never really know what faults lie within until you’ve owned it.
I bought my 12k miler relatively cheap but I knew what I’d need to spend to get it up to scratch. Just over 10k iirc.
I think dealers would rather point someone in the right direction if they have a seller and a buyer lined up, have s private deal and cut the dealer in.
The customer has far too much come back these days, consumer rights are too heavily weighted

What is the cost to a dealer in the real world, simple question not looking to load the subject ?
They have to spend some time in prep, scuffed wheels, faults, tidy it up, wash and polish. cost of money for carrying it on the books warranty applied to it Cost of advertising it across various media Time spent on test drives Insurance policy addition? I guess the trader policy covers most things.
How does the VAT and business stuff add to their costs? Tax on the profit.
I can see why they would be keen to do it on commission. Straight to bottom line You can always sign up for a warranty privately these days. Insurance backed clearly.

I agree with everything you mention Alistair but that must be the same for any car, I honestly cant see the difference in selling a 2002 plus 8 or an aero of the same vintage and mileage, Bmw mechanicals only negative bit of a faff to service. At least you guys are safe in the knowledge your driving a gem and a bit of a bargain......

In my experience it’s not the BMW side of thugs that’s the issue.
What if the refurbish a mag wheel and find out it’s cracked….new ones not available.
Common issue with elec windows a £500 fir a motor BUT now obsolete.
PAS take off on crank rattling. Etc etc.

Isn't this why so many high-value cars depreciate so much in later years? It becomes prohibitively expensive to replace parts with originals, so they get other bits and pieces put in instead. It doesn't really matter if a £10k car has non-original modifications, but on a £100k car it's a much bigger deal indeed. So to preserve the value they don't get used.
II remember about 15 years ago I was up at Kevin Vernon's and he had a Bentley Continental there. It was less than 10 years old, but had a high mileage and was worth a surprisingly little, less than £20k or so IIRC. I found it amazing because to all intents and purposes it was an extremely well-looked after car. But as Kevin pointed out, servicing costs were astronomic, as were parts prices.

I think the thread on the S2 had a slightly different ending - £40k to the seller and the auction boys get a large G&T with the sellers wallet losing £56k ?
I agree re the BM parts being solid and probably available (even if via the breakers yard recently provided online store) for some time. Elements like the infamous fuse box, window lifters, head lamp mounts, wheels, suspension elements will be more interesting.
To be fair any low volume, largely hand built, specialist car will have some issues. The difference will be in the manufacturer's commitment. Bits for the Trads should remain simple and so not a major fuzzy ache to sort, bits for the aero could turn out to be more of a ride. I still say we need to take out life insurance on SimonH.
If the S2 handed me £56k personally and the Coupe £200k and spares as well as skills in the servicing bay turn to poop I may not be called the Loony with the Morgan problem at the office anymore.
