GEOMAGNETIC UNREST: Earth's magnetic field is disturbed today as our planet moves into a high-speed stream of solar wind.. A minor G1- class geomagnetic storm broke out during the early hours of Oct. 15th, then quickly subsided. Minor storm conditions could recur throughout the day !!

Possibility of northern lights tonight


A 'CANYON OF FIRE' JUST OPENED ON THE SUN: A plume of hot plasma more than 300,000 km long arced over the South-western edge of the sun during the early hours of Oct. 15th. Beneath it, a 'canyon of fire' opened:

This weird explosion hurled a bright CME into space. images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) do not yet rule out a glancing blow to Earth early next week.

Cheers Graham ... will keep an eye out .... was a lovely clear (and slightly frosty) night last night .... however this morning it's windy, chucking it downand can hardly see the end of the garden.

INCOMING SOLAR WIND STREAM: Minor G1-Class geomagnetic storms are possible on Oct. 24th when a fast moving stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere.

Also, although probably best viewed last night, the Orionids meteor shower (tail from Halley's comet) is around this time.. Likely best views of meteor trails between 01:00 and dawn.

I'm on Orkney next week - what do you think the chances are of a glimpse?

It really depends on the sun's activity Phil. A fair chance I would have thought. Enjoy your trip

If they're about you stand a great chance of seeing them there .... nice and far north and plenty of dark skies to be found ... good luck.

Looks to be cloudy and rainy here tonight so I'll likely watch the flickering flames in the woodburner instead 🙂

Ps The Orcadians and Shetlanders call them the 'Mirrie Dancers' ... Mirr is the North Islands term for shimmer.

The gaseous material is flowing from a cheerful looking hole in the sun's atmosphere. High latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras this weekend.

ARCTIC AURORA WATCH: A high-speed stream of solar wind is gently buffeting Earth's magnetosphere today. As a result, there is a chance of minor G1-Class geomagnetic storms. Arctic sky watchers should remain alert for auroras this weekend.

CHANCE OF STORMS TODAY: NOAA forecasters say there is a chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms on Nov. 4th and 5th as Earth continues to pass through a stream of fast-moving solar wind. The gaseous material is flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere.

LONG-RANGE FORECAST: A fast-moving stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field on Nov. 19th or 20th. It's flowing from an emerging hole in the sun's atmosphere. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras at the end of this week.
