All modern cars have way too many IT inspired bits & pieces. I know when I bought yoks ago my Motto Guzzi Le Mans MKIII I was helped over the risk of Italian lectrics by the Dutch bike dealer pointing all was Bosch, but that lot was dead simple vs modern stuff

Possibly a silly question, but:
The survey in question is published by a Warranty firm who have a vested interest in driving their costs down. Could it be that they have skewed the data towards their costs rather than the number / severity of incidents in an attempt to make cars that cost them money less attractive to people who buy cars older than 3 years old?

I suspect they might be aiming to sell more extended Warranty insurance to owners?

That company is well known. Not meant in a rude manner. I would put some of it down to PR as you mention.
I would hazard a guess that people who take out aftermarket warranties (as highlighted by the comments above in fact) are buying expensive to maintain cars in the first place and want to defray the costs. Seems fair, Once a car model is 3-5 years old the frailties will become common knowledge so it is easier to sell against them. Manufacturers seem to see the repair and parts business as their main bread and butter until the recent chip shortage issue and milked it for all it is worth.
As second/third/fourth owners it makes a lot of sense to take one of those at the time of purchase. I did when I bought the S2 from an independent dealer. How that went is a different discussion. So the fact that Pork and all the others are in the list is not a great surprise. I was surprised Bentley was number 1 but they are complex monsters. I have a local dealer near me selling a beautiful DB9 with immaculate interior and exterior, 40k miles proven for £35k. Younger me would have gone for it with a decent sized warranty.
Looking back, the two main Porks I owned were both stripped out Club Sport 968's. I bought warranties with both, Pork for the first one and aftermarket for the other. They were rock solid and left a lasting impression of being made from thick steel. Neither warranty was ever claimed against. They were also pretty simple, including wind up windows and manual everything. The boot release was a plastic hoop poking out of a carpet hole on the drivers B pillar and was a simple cable back to the hatch mechanism. Loved it. I bought it based on the engine and handling from one short test drive. At first it felt a bit solid and spartan but after 6-9 months the dependable, trustworthy, aspect displaced that. I will also never forget the Recaro buckets, the Tillets in the Coupe are the nearest I have experienced since. Look rotten for comfort but actually keep you solid so you enjoy it more.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

So far, so good. The Boxster has a 2 year "Porsche" warranty. Talking to other Porsche owners it seems that mechanical problems are rare, but expensive. A Porsche extension warranty is available and recommended, if only because the owner controls when the money is spent, not chance. All Tarka's unplanned service issues have been electronic.... or wear and tear. So far, an after market warranty would have been pointless.

The reliability rating is derived from a number of factors including the cost of repairs which will likely be more costly on a high end car.
Therefore not a true reflection of actual reliability IMHO. How likely a car is to break down or need specialist attention is of more interest to most of us surely.
Having said that, there's enough information available to confirm that German cars in general don't merit their high end reputation and also that JLR products top most lists of unreliable products.

I guess that the Porsche brand along with that of Range Rover still manages to sell cars and at a price, would suggest that somehow or other despite the bad press people still want to buy them... ? If you found the last vid link I posted on why folk buy Porsches in any way interesting, you might find interest in this one where the business model of Porsche is explained to some degree.. It seems to be produced in a very similar fashion... Hmm..? https://youtu.be/vxFJJtzFJaw

I suspect that there may be many different warranties available. I bought my Porsche from a country wide BMW franchise, it came with a six months insurance based warranty having passed a BMW pre owned series of checks.... The warranty only covered up to a max of £4k for any one repair, which in Porsche terms equates to a degree of risk...?
I had my 991 subjected to a complimentary condition series of checks at my local Porsche centre who found that the alarm siren had issues... Circa £300 replacement cost... The warranty insurance paid for that.
After the obligatory 3 months had passed from the date of purchase my 991 was then subjected to and passed the 111 point Porsche checklist at my local Porsche dealership, my 991 was then eligible to join the Porsche extended warranty scheme which is again an insurance based scheme, which costs approximately £1k/annum and can be purchased up to a max of three years cover at any one time.
I guess there are warranties of all types some good and others perhaps not so good..?

and everyone thinks you're a knob................ That certainly applies over here especially when they turn up en-mass at our local cars and coffee event. Porsche certainly seems to be our local soccer mums car of choice, they flock together in a Murmuration ballet during school run time.
