Do people have a favourite tyre for driving in snow?

Not looking for esoteric snow tyres but general purpose tyres that perform OK in reasonable depths of snow.

Whats the definition of a reasonable depth of snow, 1/2 inch, 2 inches, 5 inches; soft snow, wet snow, ice? Dependent on the answer and what your driving skills are would determine the type of tyre you need. All weather tyres are marginal in snow and ice as many drivers who think they have a winter tyre find out to their detriment. We see it all the time here in the Rocky Mountains with drivers who have little to no experience of driving in snow and ice with two wheeled mostly front wheel drive vehicles, who loudly exclaim from the ditch "I have all weather tyres". Blizzak are a very good Winter Tyre.

Bruce I would agree on that. They are a compromise but as you know most of the UK gets a few inches only

We have Michelin CrossClimate on the Morgan, the VW Polo, and the Jaguar XE. I guess you could imagine that we are happy with them. They are legal here for winter use and our tyre guy says they are his best selling tyre.
They have good all round performance: not quite as good as a sticky sports tyre in the dry and not quite as good as a dedicated snow tyre in the snow, but fantastic in the wet.

I should add to the above that you must have certified snow tyres, 3 mountain peaks and snowflake mark, or carry chains,from November to March in northern Italy..

I swopped to Michelin Cross Climate 2 last year, been good in the recent snow & low temps, and best of all you just leave them on all year, (dry summer performance has been quite acceptable & they aren't noisy)

Agree that Michelin Cross Climate seem to be the best "all-weather" tyre around , albeit at a price.

On my Volvo V70 I prefer to use dedicated winter tyres on steel rims for the December to March period. I live on a hill and can get up it with ease even in pretty marginal conditions when all the SUVs and 4x4s of my neighbours are slipping and sliding.

For the +8 I prefer to use good summer tyres with acceptable/good wet weather performance. With a light car and only moderate mileage (5k pa , now 74k in total) the wear rate is so low that I am changing them based on age rather than tread depth. I have found my Avon ZV5s wore well but became "hard" rather too quickly , hence the ned to change.

The Cross Climate are on the family tin top, the Mog runs Avon ZV7's
