Mine tried to kill me several times just by promising fun...
Just as the 1300cc Mini it had to go after a very short time.

I shall disagree Peter as seems to be in my nature... at least on the man/woman thing, for it seems the Scottish government may be in the process of decreeing that you can indeed choose to be recognised as either...!

I find it more difficult to generate an argument on the subject of cars and much else we might gather around ourselves being considered as "toys," though I do concede that such choices may be made on the basis of our perception of that which by it`s acquisition might enhance our quality of life..?

The memories created relative to ownership of my Morgan seem unlikely to have been repeated by any other vehicle to the same extent.. and very unlikely to get even close to it, if my transport choice had been restricted to a Dacia, NOT that there is anything wrong with Dacia.

I owned and made good use of utilitarian transport over decades as my primary transport, LR and mostly 1 ton p/up trucks, but that was no substitute for the metal mistress kept in the garage for use as an occasional escape from day to day life...Be that spending months nailing it back together, or finally firing it up and taking to the road...More than just a toy for sure.. ?

The car mainstream manufacturers produce cars with varying specs. They entice buyers to go upwards as there is more profit.
Look at Morgan, go to the car creator and build up from the base spec. Watch the ££££££ increase. Bloody hell.....£200+ for different colour thread for leather stitching!
By that argument is any car above bog standard base spec a toy?
Is the badge the enticement? Is an “M” badge the car to toy changer? Remember when fuel injection became more mainstream? The “i” badge was a desirable attribute. Escort 1.6 a utility car but the efi badge makes it a toy? Disc brakes....a stick on badge changed a drum brake car to a toy? Even if no discs added!
I’d like a 2CV as a daily runabout. Is it then a toy?

Rather than the car or its characteristics be used to determine what one may consider a toy, I would argue its more a reflection of to what use the vehicle is put and the frequency of use may better determine whether it is a toy or not.

For example I had a Morgan 4/4 as my one and only and everyday transport for nearly 3 years, using it for both business and private miles, from the weekly shopping to continental holidays, it had its limitations which became more apparent with everyday use, it certainly wasn't IMHO a toy, . Whereas my Morgan Roadster is basically used for high days and rarely pressed into everyday type of service and used eg for the weekly shopping and I would consider it to be an indulgence / toy.

By these definitions, our Discovery is a toy. The main reason for running such a large car for two people is to tow our horses around.

The positive side benefit is that it is relatively easy to load 90+ year old parents plus walkers, wheel chairs etc into the Disco. And the lowering air suspension makes it slightly easier for them to get in.

Is it a toy now?

Toy:

"Something for a child to play with". Probably very relevant to us!!

"Something resembling a child's toy especially in providing amusement of entertainment". Definitely relevant to us!!

"Something that is or appears to be small". Could be relevant to us!!

"Someone or something that can be toyed with". Quite often in the garage?

"Something (such as a preoccupation) that is paltry or trifling". Some people's opinion of us!!!

"To act or deal with something lightly or without vigor or purpose". Certainly not Morgan owners!!

"To amuse oneself as if with a toy". Certainly Morgan owners!!

Whilst growing old is, sadly, compulsory, growing up remains optional.

I continue to decline the option.

In the off chance that there might be interest in Porsche reliability, those with rally interests might find this vid interesting.... All be it that the Porsches are air cooled thus perhaps have less to go wrong..?
I also note that a rather nice sounding TR8 (?) along with a Rover seemed to be doing rather well too..! Neither of which would have been my choice for such an event, but then I guess preparation has a lot to do with results..No Morgans though..Pity.
