On a slight drift, regarding crash protection rather then reliability - presume Ferraris must meet impact standards, but this vid shows a recent Californian collision involving two other ‘everyday’ cars which looked like they survived the impact well while the Ferrari looks like it has been shredded.

Makes for sobering viewing doesn't it. Idiot factor involved by the sound of it, the Ferrari and a Tesla were reported to be playing silly Bu**ers causing a head-on. That's ruined Christmas for a few people.

There really are some sobering images there. Tends to make me feel more satisfied with my 2013 Mazda.

Sobering, the Ferrari looks as if it exploded from the impact, the other two cars are "normally" damaged.

Small volume models, like the Ferrari, are normally not crash tested, but do receive a Euro NCAP inspection and rating. The Morgan Aeros were, at great expense, crash tested and performed well, but all open two seater cars are intrinsically less safe than a "TinTop".

Sobering indeed. Looks to me as if the driver of the California / Portofino was "giving it some" on a canyon road, lost control, went up the bank either before or after collecting two oncoming cars. Cant say the level of destruction worries me - if it was travelling far faster then you would expect far more damage even before the firemen and the hydraulic scissors got involved. I ride motorbikes and it doesnt worry me that I am more than 17 times as likely to be killed on one as in a car - were that my concern, I would travel by bus. My worry is dying from cancer in hospital like a pal of mine did

Turning to the maintenance costs, I think it more than likely that a car tthat costs 5 times as much as the average is likely to cost 5 times as much to maintain. Product quality, as Morgan owners find, is inevitably worse on small production products - the steady tempo of high volume prodution, not to mention the mechanisation of the process make this so. If you are worried about maintenance costs then buy something like a Honda Jazz, Or again get the bus.

These aplles and tomatoes comparisons of wildly different products are daft. You see them on the bike forums where some impecunious 20 year old claims (probab;ly correctly), that he blew off a Lambo on his Kawasaki. So what? If he could afford the Lambo, he would be happy to have it.

It doesn't look like the normal cars took as much impact energy as the Ferrari. If they did, it's an even scarier picture as far as the Ferrari is concerned. Above a certain speed, many cars look similar...or the cars look better and someone is still dead, unfortunately. This Ferrari, in my estimation, must have torn it apart at 120 mp/h and somehow other than just on the two cars involved.

I would say the more a car deforms the better, it has absorbed energy and not put it all through to the occupant, but clearly the Ferrari went beyond that.
