Hi, all, posting this in several forums to get some opinions from the experts. Our '64 4/4 has the SSL 5 link rear suspension, which is supposed to eliminate wheel hop. However, under hard acceleration, I can still get them hopping right along. Our 1600 Kent crossflow is probably somewhere north of 130 HP, so that is probably a factor, but looking for suggestions. Wolf Performance has "anti tramp" bars, but they appear to be for cars with leaf springs. Thoughts?

Personally I'd go back to SSL and chat with them. Peter gives some excellent advice and support via email.

Agreed although wonder if something is loose? The SSL 5 link rear like the Morgan version has upper and lower links each side (+ panhard rod making 5) providing far superior axle location compared to leaf springs, even with one or two single anti-tramp bars added to the latter.

I would be looking as a start at the security of axle clamps in image above although this is latest beefed up version.

A panhard rod should help if all the SSL bits are tight & set up right. It made a big difference to my Rover engined +4. The +4 with the T16 stock was stated as 136bhp . It stopped the back stepping out but you quote hopping which to me implies spring wind up and axle tramp.

For a Panhard rod explanation see here

Talking to SSL seems sensbile to me.

Thanks for the information! Just to clarify, the car had both the SSL front and rear suspension set-up when we bought it, and it does have a Panhard rod. I will definitely be getting in touch with them.

That's about as good as you can get when fitted and front adjusted correctly so something is amiss.

When your wheels "hop" is it both sides or just one?

Usually both with an unrestrained live axle on leaf springs. The whole thing twists and chatters up and down and tyres intermittently loose grip. It's known as axle tramp over here, hence anti-tramp bars. Odd thing is the OP's car should simply not be capable of that, particularly as it no longer has leaf springs confused2

Are the rear tyres old and hardened, are the pressures correct ? With the SSL rear set up correctly you shouldn't get tramp
