What is the general opinion on the need to replace the cam-belt on a 1.8 Zetec?
My 8 year old 4/4 averages about 4,000 a year. Ford state that the cam-belt only needs replacing every 100,000 miles!
That made me nervous, especially as I don't use the car that ofetn during the winter' so I had mine replaced at Berrybrook 2 years ago.
I would be grateful for any thoughts or input on this subject.

Thanks

Bud

I'd personally change it every five years or 50k miles, whichever came sooner.

I agree 5 years or so. I had a friend with a low mileage Capri where it went on the M1. That costs real money compared to the cam belt.

It's peace of mind. My local garage does loads of cambelts, and always has a big pile for disposal. 99.99% of belts look perfect.

But if you gamble and lose it can cost big bucks.

I'd also change the water pump at the same time.

I prefer the Guzzi MV Augusta solution of a chain or gears but it costs upfront of course & the gears can be louder.

The Zodiac V6 had gears but the teeth were fibre and could strip......
A constant worry with my Gilbern.

I prefer chain or gears too, but chains can let go.

One of the SpeedMog competitors is on 9 years and 30 some k miles shocked2 .
I hope I've persuaded him to change the belt this winter.

Cheers,

60,000 miles or 6 years is recommended for my Rover 75.

I'm a bit paranoid about cam belts....had one go on a 30,000 mile three year old Golf tdi....it needed a new engine. Luckily 1 week out of warranty and VW paid!

One of those times when the wife was right (as always). Kept telling me that there was a funny ticking sound...I kept telling her it was nothing, just something caught in the tyre.....WRONG oops
