You know when you start to ask questions like "when is the right time to retire?"

Retired from work 6 years ago without a backward glance

In spite of finding myself without a car having damaged it beyond repair in a crash ... I have yet again avoided retiring from racing and will be back out next season.

And I have enough unstarted garage projects to fill a lot of another lifetime still pending.

When I can afford to live on my pension.

For me, it's about 9 years, when I've paid off the mortgage.I have no desire to work a minute longer than I have to (even though I do have a fabulous job).

When you can't stand the work politics

Try reduced hours and see if the off days are better than work days

I knew the day I started my apprenticeship when i was 15 years old and clearly remember saying only 50 years to retirement, I managed to cut it back 5 years and retired at 60. Only one regret should of done it earlier.

Depends on how much, if at all, you enjoy doing your job/career/vocation or whatever.

Sometimes going part time is good as you can dip your toe into the retirement pool to see if it suits.

What ever you do - do not get bored. Get in the Mog and drive 👍

When tells you. Coming up to 24 years now - not regretted for a moment.

When it stops being fun to go to work and when you can no longer tolerate the idiots you are forced to work with. That’s the joy of retirement, you don’t have to mix with people you find infuriating.

If your pensions are already good enough and you are mortgage free, go for it. You won’t regret it. Just make sure you have plans to treat retirement as a long term project - it is not an extended holiday. You will need different things to do. We are lucky, with 2 horses, a Morgan, U3A and my work as trustee of a charity we rarely find ourselves at a loose end. We do fill any gaps with plenty of holidays though.

In April, I've been retired for five years. Not a single regret. As Paul said, the politics, the back stabbing, having to interact with people you would otherwise not spend a second with. All that I can do without.

If you live for work and have no hobbies, then retirement may be a challenge. But work for me was always secondary to my hobbies, which even now I don't have enough time for. Life is short. Work gets in the way. So get out as soon as your ducks are in a row.
