I would second that,
the F-Type is a good looking coupe or convertible, comfortable enough and nice to drive.
I use one as my daily driver and really like it. As a sports car though it is not good and exciting enough.
Technically it is based on the XKR-plattform, and the weight distribution is not very fortunate with the engine too far in the front ant the rear being light.
This results in under steering and spinning rear wheels on the spirited drives.
Again, good road car and GT, really, but no replacement for a Morgan.

A shortened version of the XKR platform and the V6 which I had is 50/50. Got to say I never had any understeer but did enjoy spinning the back wheels with launch control. The real issue it has IMO is that its way too heavy at something like 1850 kg for the V8. But it is open top unlike the Alpine

what modern sports car would you buy for driving fun. Open sports car that is and of course a two seater..

I think several posters have not read the OP I read it but qualified the need for a permanent lid - besides I have never been good at conforming, hence lack of club memberships  My Alpine is a 2 seater though  The GTI is staying I'm told so it will be the Plus8 and Fiesta that will go sometime.

I used to think a MX5 would be the best alternative, a series 1 or the latest, both are gorgeous.
But now I've become a Boxster "Fan Boy", a delight to behold and to drive.
Today I discovered that the back end is able to step out under the guidance of the drivers right foot, in a delightfully controllable way: the Plus 8 does exactly the same.
Both are 350bhp or thereabouts, light and have responsive steering and great brakes.
The Boxster wins on rider comfort and a powered hood, the Plus 8 on character and charm.
Torn...don't know which way to go.

My sons NA in front of my mothers house. His car is very heavily tuned with different camshafts, teflon bushings, struts, cage with roll bar and much more. But it still retains its original charm and is a great sports car. Yep ... read the OP .... however, if I didn't have the Morgan the gap in my fleet wouldn't be for a modern car ... it would be for something characterful and old ...... hence the liberty taken with the task
Now my single seater has bitten the dust I suppose somewhere in the spectrum of cars in my life there's a vacancy under the heading of 'mental' .... do Radical still do the roadgoing SR8?? ... that fits the OP parameters !! 🙂

In answer to the original question - my answer would be ‘none’ Unless it’s old, I have no desire to have an open car, regardless of the number of seats, it’s cost, or the badge on the front. To quote a young friend, about men of a certain age driving modern convertible 2 seaters. “you just risk looking like a sad old tw*t”. Bud 4/4 - Stanley Signing off now.
