One of my old bosses has become part of a guidance and VC program and has recently worked with a really smart company called Sesame Solar. It is a nano-grid package apparently.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/25/sesame-solar-is-selling-clean-energy-nanogrids-for-disasters.html
https://www.sesame.solar/

They have won numerous awards for the product and it seems a really smart application but then she was always bright and ahead of the game.

A trailer which carries an instantly deployable solar array, batteries and the other bits that join them up. I believe it also carries comms for Internet to enable services to connect as well. They are positioning it as instant help for emergencies (flood, storm etc) which is a new angle and smart.

She was very happy as they had been lugging it around with a big diesel GM truck and her new Rivian just arrived so it could even charge itself. I guess it takes the Toyota "self charging" statement and makes it more complete! She loves the Rivian but lives in Michigan so it will be an interesting test for cold weather in the area.

That was a good price, I have just had an estimate for a 10kwh battery and it was £11k. with a buy/ sell price here of 18p / 8p I could not even make green tinted man maths work.

I will probably need to wait until V2H is available.

A quick update. With some sunny days here this week the batteries were full on the 15th and so provided power overnight into the morning of the 16th. On the 16th the sun shone and we were very nearly off grid. The battery was empty at 08:00 & the heating kettle etc coming on meant we imported 360W .
We used in the day 10.08 kWh, the rest or 96% came from the array & the batteries.

On to today and the batteries ran out at 08:00 again just as the sun rose so at nearly midday We have consued 1.36 kWh & only imported 360W.

Over the month we have used 187 kWh of which 115 kWh was imported & the batteries saved me 72 kWh or 39%.
Payback based upon mid winter is 9 years. Of course cloudy dark days will push this back but it does show how the batteries really help.

That's good John. Batteries are definitely a good idea to maximise one's ability to use self-generated power oneself. So far this year we have used 5.92MWh (includes charging the EV) of which 3.19MWH came from our panels. The significant bit however is that of this, 2.77MWh came from the battery. Our system will have paid back in 8 years (but we've already had it 2 years) or less if electricity cost inflation stays above 4%

Year to day we have generated 4.3 MWh but of course without batteries not all has been captured by us. The batteries will certainly help.

Last night in the pub one of the guys who delivers van for a lease company told me just how expensive fast charging is at a Mway service station. Way above petrol cost.

Yes, I guess until the network develops and gets a bit more competitive there's quite a scope for profiteering/exploitation. I imagine there's always the option of legislation to control it if it becomes a problem long term, but someone is going to have to pay for the infrastructure in the end.

I've not used a motorway charge point yet. I just checked the price at Michaelwood on the M5 and the 50KW charger is 65p/KWh so for an average EV that indicates just under 17p/mile. An ICE car doing 45mpg on diesel (171.9 at Michaelwood) would be paying 17.5p/mile. My Landy only does 30mpg so 26p/mile. My Morgan which does 37mpg on E5 (183.9) would be 22p/mile.

I don't know the normal mileage of your van-driving pal but I guess it could get more expensive than his petrol car, but not based on this example?

I suppose the answer is to not buy any sort of fuel on the motorway if you can avoid it.

3.8 miles per KWh on a motorway seems a tad optimistic though! For a van / typical van driver 2 might be a closer number? I see Ford claim 2.44 for motorway use of the EV Transit… (166 miles, 68KWh battery)…
