Now I really do think this is progress, not just the usual vanity enviro tick box jobby. Deep Green and it could save a few vital Sports Centres, 14 are planning to utilise the technology.

Its not really progress, back in the early 1990s I was involved in the development of a computerised estimating system for construction & the software company we used had an outside swimming pool as the cooler for the mainframe computer running their accounts system.
They were based in Matlock & I have a photo somewhere of the pool in use whilst the surrounding grounds are covered in snow.

Having said that, its a sensible thing to do with mutual benefits to both parties so what's not to like.

Interesting, it was all new to me and it has to be good.

Seeing as my local.pool has been getting colder and colder (either for environmental or financial reasons depending on who you talk to) ... the sooner they do a deal with the local bitcoin-miners the better!! 🙂

You can also get a small server fitted to your hot water tank. The 3rd party suppllies & uses the server. They pay for the power. You provide free WiFi but also get the free energy as waste heat.

I have a nephew who built his own desktop computer using proprietary parts to satisfy his enthusiasm for online gaming. The CPU(s) and graphics chips ran so fast they had to be water cooled with dissipation via heat exchanger. My brother and I joked he could have heated his house with it. Imagine the heat dissipation needed if this was scaled up though.

I saw that one of the big “Cloud” companies ( can’t remember if Facebook, Apple or other) were looking to build a big centre in Eire. The problem was that it is massively power hungry and there were questions about the effect on the grid capacity.
A balance, perhaps, of power needed versus benefit of heat byproduct being available for use.
Waste heat generated by any source is a handy byproduct. Many years ago I remember seeing cooling water from a coal fired power station being used as a feed into a fish farm. Warm water accelerated growth of some of the premium fish. I don’t know how successful or viable though.
A local power station ( now long gone) discharged warm water into adjoining estuary. The outlet was a popular place to fish. Sea water sucked in for cooling and warm water exiting.

I recall Battersea power station when functioning heated old folks homes in Chelsea.

Many moons ago as a field engineer I visited an IBM 3270 mainframe site that had some cooling problems. The CPU bits were watercooled and I went through the issues. I resolved it by taking the cans of Stones Bitter out of the cooling water trough. It went back up to the correct volume and the problem was solved. I heard this sarcastic comment from the back of the room "I suppose you will be taking the bacon barns out of the UPS battery room next".

There's nought wrong with watercooling your gaming PC. It also means that you have less noise from fans etc.
