Saw a short piece in a well known (and trusted) Classic Car magazine selling the praises of "Philips ultinon pro9000" as a replacement for, in my case, H4, halogen bulbs. Based on this, and perhaps without researching it enough, onto a well know selling web site and purchased pair of said bulbs. Looking at the back of the box I see that they marked (not very prominently) for track/rally use only and not legal in the UK. So back they have gone.

Bit more research shows that these are legal in some EU countries but not yet in the UK so its perhaps just waiting for getting the approval. And they would be an MoT failure.

I had seen the threads on here about that but assumed, wrongly, that these were OK as they were shown in the well trusted magazine without any such warnings.

So, point of this ramble?....what do people recommend to use to uprate the standard H4s in my beloved 2015 Plus 4 headlights.

Any advice appreciated...

I've tried a few "high Spec" H4 headlamp bulbs. Without exception they are a big improvement on standard. But having just tried a set of "Ultimate Ultimate" H4 bulbs, they were no better than the "High Spec" bulbs I had fitted, when the light was cast onto my trusty cardboard beam setter.

They promise the world. They promise a bright white/blue beam, and what you get is that the headlamp looks whitish, and bueish, but the cast beam still has a yellow tinge.

LED's are massively better, but the bulbs are not legal on newer cars. So the only LED option is a pair of sealed units. For the number of times we are out in the dark, even man maths doesn't justify the cost of these.

Optically They are great , but I do find the looks a tad challenging on a trad.

The key drivers for me are being seen after being T boned despite lights on & driving at night.
Why the UK govt bans LEDs in cars after 1986 but allows them before despite the clear safety upgrade really annoys me. When I had LED H4 replacements I was very happy. They work and look classic

Thanks for all the advice. Personal choice but don't like the units with lots of lenses in. And the other replacement units that look like the origonals are to expensive for my taste.
