I have a little corrosion around the fixing point of the bonnet strap. Can anyone tell me if the bolts shown are into the wood or not? I can't get underneath to see or feel. If they are then it should be faairly simple to fix. If not then not so easy. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2023/03/28/IMG_4617-1-1.jpeg)

No wood there to my knowledge. The setscrews may be into captive nuts in which case attempting to remove one will prove. Otherwise can you gain access to nuts from footwell?

I never thought to look there but you are spot on in as much as you can see from the footwell what is going on. There is a wooden frame and it looks like that is where the bolts are. Someone has inserted a metal spacer too presumably to stop any distortion when the bolts have been tightened. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2023/03/28/IMG_4619-1.jpeg)

Always use a brand new drill when you drill aluminium. A drill used in steel can harbour tiny partials of steel which can get into the Au and May very well cause galvanic corrosion. Body shows carefully separate tools used on Au. Sure it will be fine - if you are unfortunate enough to get it you have to cut it out ahead of the corrosion as it becomes inter-granular. Ask me how I know …

You are 100% right. Doesn't appear to be too bad so I think I'm ok but what a nightmare this galvanic corrosion is!

More info here. Note it's not just the separation of nobility of metals that dictate corrosion. Large areas of the more cathodic metal will increase corrosion whereas large areas of anodic will reduce. Consequently stainless fixings into aluminium sheets are considered safe.

Stainless and nearly all metals are a predator for Aluminum. To solve it use always TefGel with SS and Alu. It is a compound which seals the metals from each other a little bit. [ on Amazon € 50 ] We used it a lot at sea on the alu-masts and the SS or 8.8 steel mast-fittings and it works well when you check it once a year. Zinc Galvanized is also a problem. Just a matter of the periodic system. Only Magnesium is eaten by Aluminum
