Saw my first Swallow of the year this morning, It was just a quick flyby to make sure their front door is still open. They normally return in numbers in about 5 to 7 days.

Not seen one yet, nor the house martins who let us live in their house.

Here in S.Wilts / Dorset I saw swallows (only in tiny numbers) in December / January. Did they eventually go south or were they attempting to avoid the journey? I know our winters are getting warmer but the cold spells were surely too cold for flying insects.

We have had them back here already mind for the last few winters here we have noticed that the insect population carries on throughout the winter on the wing in our garden so plenty to munch on.

They arrived in South Notts a week ago. Still only a few about though. The pair that nested in Mrs F's stable last year have yet to appear.

They'll need their thermal underwear and a packed-lunch for a while yet up here ... geese aren't gone North yet. ..... Nipped out to local car meet this morning and although it was dry and bright the nip in the wind made it a bit baltic behind the aeroscreens ... couldn't use the new hood tho ... had to show the 'Yoof' the true Morgan ethic!! 😄

The House Martins are back and busy rebuilding their nests. They must read TM!

A couple more weeks before the Swallows and Hummingbirds arrive up here assuming they can get across the Mexican Border, it always snows just after they arrive.

I was amazed to be told in Tobago that humming birds there migrate from Venezuela. Nature is amazing

Nature is amazing indeed... if you care to beam up the migration pattern of Monarch butterflies you might be as surprised as was I..?
