The Ford box is well known for being a trifle "crunchy" getting into 2nd when cold. Usually improves once warmed up, but is not a fast change.

Thanks Graham, that's reassuring. Drove it to Brooklands yesterday and it was OK once warmed up. Quite surprised at how gutless the engine was though - needed to be revved hard to make progress. I think that may be my lack of experience with sports cars showing through though. The only other drama was that I forgot my gloves - won't make that mistake again!

The 4/4 is very chuckable as it is light but you do need to wring it's neck to make fast rather than smooth progress. I found more fun in the smooth option.

Terrifying acceleration calls for the bigger engined cars but then the weight & power vs the trad chassis and the wider tyres makes them less chuckable.

Thanks John, I guess it is just learning how to drive a very different car. My last sports car was an MGC significantly updated with fast road engine, power steering etc etc. IT was very fast, and hugely torquey; above 2500 rpm it really flew, but I could also trickle through 30mph villages in 4th. I agree though that smooth, quiet progress is preferable to screaming about like a banshee! I will get used to it in time - it is very different from my 1939 Daimler, that's for sure.

Welcome Mark, I am probably close by you as I'm in Poole and have a very similar looking Morgan to you - an Ivory Plus4 which I've enjoyed for the last 4 years, we're of for two weeks to tour Northern Spain in her tomorrow..

Anyway, hope you enjoy your time with the Morgan and perhaps we'll "bump" into one another somewhere in Dorset sometime.

Thank you both. I took the car to Brooklands today, 2.5hrs each way up and down the A31, which must rank as one of the worst maintained A roads in the UK. Not sure my back can take too much of that again...

The A31 is indeed less than perfect, but there are worse roads.
It does sound like the suspension on your car could do with some attention. Morgan Motor Company has a "house style" for its suspension that helps reenact the 1950s; my experience on two Morgans is the front does not work in harmony with the back. Try talking to SSL, they improved my Roadster and transformed my Plus 8.
