I think with most modern cars the speedo is also linked with the ECU so, most likely, if there is a fault in the sensor or the circuit the engine management light would come on. In the worst case, but unlikely, it could also be a fault with the ECU.

Problem fixed by the dealer. It was the sensor. ;-)
