The only battery necessary would be the engine starting batter which we already have in place.

As to electric efficiency, the efficient part is the engine running at a more constant rpm if you vary voltage with a big rheostat rather than varying engine rpm.

As Centa drive M3W owners note, a marine application is much more constant speed than a car. wink
Pretty sure a rheostat is an inefficient variable resister you would NOT want on an EV! But some other controller for sure smile
Nissan's engine tech is a bit like you describe - engine drives generator drives motor. However they still put a battery in between the generator and the motor for better response, regeneration etc.

My Ford Maverick Hybrid has a 1.1Kwh HV battery to store power from regeneration, its also used to start the engine, so you don't need a very large HV battery. The Fisker PHEV project had a 20.1Kwh HV battery equaling a electric only range of under 30 miles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisker_Karma

A hybrid a a very different animal than an power unit producing power only when the engine is running. The hybrid complicates things and by eliminating the big battery, the transmission, the clutch, driveshaft and bevel box and replacing those things with a generator and an electric motor on the rear wheel I bet there would be a weight savings.

I believe that the following is technically feasible:

Leave the S&S engine and exhaust pipes in place, but gut it of all internal components. The visual impact of the iconic 3W remains; (something the latest iteration from Malvern will never achieve).
Remove entire drivetrain to rear wheel.
The above will bring a huge simplification of known issues, as well as significant weight reduction.
Install battery bank under bonnet. Electric motor replaces bevel box, and drives rear wheel via existing belt system. Possibly, weights will be compensated.
Install "Barrio Blaster" sound system that coordinates with foot pedal rheostat position and puts out V-twin noise for the "de rigeur" sound effects.

Constructive comments welcome, and I especially look forward to the gents' ideas from Casa Grande and Port Orchard. I have access to engineering sources presently manufacturing electric aircraft tugs, and believe that the concept may have commercial feasibility.

Sorry, not my way to go, but there is not enough room in the m3w to install the loudspeakers to imitate the original sound...

You are correct, a battery acts as a buffer and storage medium. Another big issue with EV's is the heat generated by the system. Cooling the motors is a big deal.

Btw , related to thread - ss wants absolutely nothing to do with wedge or Morgan . Lol I spoke on them today … zero help zero parts for wedge other than maybe a spark plug or zip tie ! Lol
Appreciate any cylinders or piston help . Tx
