Re police and overtaking, many, many years ago I was driving to work in my old MGB one morning with the hood down when I came upon a long line of cars in the right lane going along at around 5 MPH under the posted speed limit, so I pulled into the left lane and passed them. When I got to the front of the line, there was a state trooper in a marked cruiser. I am reminded of the day we were returning home from Leeds by coach. On the long climb on the A3 past Guildford cathedral the traffic was quite heavy. A VW Golf past us and tailgated the car in front until he had blue flashing lights right in front of him Moral: Don't tailgate an umarked police car

If that means passing a car on the right side on a motorway: That is not common today.

A large problem nowadays is, that a lot driver think, that the right lane is reserved for lorries (only).

Undertaking is normal and necessary over here, though I do prefer the safer and more educated English motorway system, when I have UK visitors in the car they often stiffen in their seats as we dash through the inside of some dreamer. I believe that the average motorway speed being so much slower here contributes to people dreaming down the road and not concentrating.

I suppose the act of undertaking isn’t dangerous in itself, especially if the driver of the car in front is driving along totally unaware of anything around and fixated on staying in the lane they’re in, they won’t know it’s happening until it’s already done. I’d say you over rate the quality of driving in the U.K. though, they may well think they’re good drivers by obeying their interpretation or the Highway Code, it’s when they don’t obey the laws of physics that the accidents happens.😀

The driving in the US, at last in the Northeastern part of the country is horrendous. Law enforcement either can't or won't do anything about it. People that stay in the fast lane until they get to their exit, then cross 3 lanes and dive off. Drivers using heavy traffic as a slalom course at 90+ MPH, when the traffic is doing 65 to 70. The list goes on.

Or something like THIS. I've actually had someone try to pass me on the right while I was slowing down and making a right turn into our driveway with my signal on...

Something Interesting is happening here in Florida (yes, that Florida). The legislators passed a new law banning cruising in the "fast" lane (left lane here). It will be a fineable offense, even when driving at the posted speed limit. Effective July 1 I believe. Going to be Interesting.

Two trends are on the increase. Sitting in lane 3. Even when lane 1 & 2 are empty. And pulling out on motorways without signalling. This one is so common that I'm wondering if it is taught.
