I need to remove the steering wheel on my 1987 4/4 and it seems to be very tight on the splines or taper. Does anyone know the best way to remove without damaging the indicator/wiper stork shroud.

Try rocking it side to side and top to bottom. Leave the centre nut on a couple of turns. If it comes off quick it will hit your nose and you will see stars.
Otherwise borrow a puller. If you were closer you could borrow mine.

What Dave says only buy the puller. They're only a few quid.

Thanks for your replies. Do you know what type of puller I need and where to get one. Do I need to unscrew the wheel for the boss and does the puller fit around the outside or inside?

Note that you need one big enough to grip the boss. I took my wheel off and put the three legs under the edge of the boss rim where the steering wheel fits. No need to remove the cowl..
Take the centre nut off and it will come away easily. The problem I have with my puller is that it's a bit oversize - not bought for steering wheels, so I really need two pairs of hands to hold everything in place while I turn the centre nut.
