I wanted a late one and planned to convert to chrome bumpers, fit some minilites and tone down the 80's deck chair interior - so when I saw a 1980 black MGB GT, with a chrome bumper conversion, minilites and a black interior it was kismet. New petrol tank, new radiator and unleaded head to boot..

Arranged to go and see it this afternoon, but he rang this morning to say the alternator had packed up. I told him I'd still come over, then went to the shed, found a spare Lucas Alternator and went over to view.

Happy with the car, alternator worked perfectly and helped me knock a few quid off the price. In the end, got it for £4K so pretty happy with that. Will need some fettling but that's what I enjoy.

She looks the goods......
enjoy

In my opinion, one of the best looking, truly useable, classics that have remained good value. Congratulations!

That’s a nice looking car and seems like a fair price too.

Check that sunroof, notorious for leaking. Can’t tell if it’s curved or flat, flat ones are worse. Ride height is easy to lower and makes the car look much better, do all the polybushes at the same time and the car will be transformed. Change the rear shocks to telescopic GAZ are probably your best bet as they are adjustable. Fit electronic ignition and unless it’s been done get a carb rebuild kit from Burlen. Done an over a few months that’ll cost you around £700 and give you a more comfortable and reliable car.

Well done

Thanks everyone !

It's a Britax factory fit sunroof so hoping it's going to be better than an aftermarket job, but will keep and eye. Worst case I'll remove it and get a panel welded over, or splash out for a Tudor/Webasto. She's been garaged for the last 6 years, but she'll have to live out in the open with me. I will probably get a cover, but it'll be a faff having to remove every morning at 6.45am, and won't be able to dry her off if it's raining. Maybe a smaller cockpit style one will do.

Will keep an eye on the suspension - I live on a 20mph road with numerous speedhumps, so will see how I get on first before I look at lowering. Proably refurb the armstrongs and go for the SSL adjustable valves - really impressed with them on the Mog and only about £90.

It has an electronic ignition but I think it's an Accuspark - not very impressed with the reliability of them (had two fail on the Mog) so may splash out on another H&H kit - given me no issues since I fitted to the Mog. I think the carbs were refurbed when the new tank was fitted, but again will have a look. I really want to squeeze as much mpg out of her as possible.

First plans will be tyres (Tread good but not sure of age), suspension and brakes.

Thank you. It is surprising (and fortuitous) that the price of them has not increased like other classis of similar vintage. I was looking around at options before settling on the MGB GT - I wanted a hardtop, space for luggage, pets (we plan on a couple of dogs some point in the future) and the ability for a cheeky tip run if needed. Most other classics the fit the bill were £10K plus. The enormous spares support network was a definite plus factor as well.

Looking forward to the ease of maintenance - when it took several hours to change a fan belt on the Corsa, I knew it was time to get something 'simpler' to work on. I swapped the alternator on the MGB at the roadside in under 10 minutes with a couple of sockets and an adjustable spanner.....

I'll give it a go. Failing that I'll go for stick on plates like on that fabulous example Bonesie drove
