Genuine question, not being sarcastic. What's the point of having a filter that every now and then releases all the nasties it has collected into the air?

On a DPF and I guess GPF the soot is trapped and then thoroughly (as possible) burnt off by the addition of a small quantity of fuel at intervals in order to re-generate filter.

took mine around castle combe track last year & gave it some stick ... it stunk of burning for the first few laps. I'm guessing it was burning off all the muck stuck to the engine/exhaust. fine after a few laps. gave it some stick last week up the alpine passes .. again it stunk initially, then it was fine.

We have owned a new CX Plus six since Dec. 21. We experienced a very unpleasant smell of ammonia when accelerating (particularly if the acceleration was up hill). It was fully investigated and no fault found, but I was advised to stop using E5 petrol and that it would go off with time. After 2,500 miles around Europe (using what ever petrol I could purchase) it has diminished considerably. So hopefully yours will improve with time also. Pete

I'll try E10 instead for a while and see if it makes a difference. Cheers Neil

Hi everyone
New here - hoping other people have experienced this and it's something innocent - 2021 Plus Four manual gearbox - basically off the road last year (for you know what....) so still only has 1600 miles on the clock. I've noticed under hard driving a burning smell - like the smell of a clutch or something like that - definitely not the smell of fuel
I'm hoping it's just oils etc burning off as the car is effectively still new.....
Has anyone else noticed any strong odours (from the car!) when they've been in the running in phase? There's no clutch slip, braking issues, vibrations, odd noises etc - so nothing that suggests anything is rubbing where it shouldn't be.
Any thoughts very welcome! Thanks Neil
LM62 Plus Four 2021 Hi Neil, Yes, I experience exactly the same thing in my 2022 P4 Auto. I had a MB E Class some years ago that did the same thing and was told by the MB dealer it was the particulate filter in the exhaust burning off excess particulate matter when the higher temperatures were generated by the catalytic converter. Whether the is the case here I cannot say for sure other that the odour was exactly the same as that experienced with my P4. Cheers, Andrew

My old Plus 8 does it periodically -which concerned me a lot initially in the UK as I thought something hot was touching timber and smouldering , but could never find a problem and decided it was a feature of the cats as no one i asked had experienced it, still does it on our fuel and my regular passenger said she quite likes it when i mentioned ditching the cats !
