Hello came to start my 2014 plus 4. I was in a rush to get to a morgan meeting put key in ignition, normally I would wait for it to go through its sequence, but this time I just turned the key.Engine turned over but did not start.Checked the battery with a charger and it read 14.2 volts ,engine turns over quick enough.Checked all fuses ,disconnected battery and re connected it,checked fuel cut out,but it still will not start. By not following the correct procedure I must have created the problem, but what is it likely to be any thoughts, duncan

It may only be coincidence that you didn’t follow procedure.
As Craig says, try spare key.
Has your key lost the transducer that is usually in the bottom corner of the plastic part next to the metal key itself.
I believe there is a sensor ring in the steering column surrounding the key hole. That picks up the presence of the key when inserted but is known to be troublesome on some cars. Hold the key flat against the key hole for a few seconds, then insert key and try to start within 30 seconds.

Is the little immobiliser lamp on the right hand side of the line of lamps on the dashboard still flashing? If so, your engine is still immobilised and that's why it won't start (you didn't state whether it was still flashing or not). I'm not sure what you mean by "go through its sequence".

If it's the immobiliser, you could try rubbing the key body around the ignition key barrel, flat to the steering column cover, until it goes off. I've had this issue with mine for years until just two days ago I tried a new technique and have had no problems since. I simply put the key in the ignition (with the number and dot towards me) and count to two. The immobiliser light goes out and I'm good to go.

If it's not the immobiliser then it's just a case of going through every usual "car not starting" thing. Good luck.

Hi it doesnt seem like its immobiliser whats happening is lock light flashing every second, put key in light goes out, turn key once radio on ,turn key again battery light on seatbelt light on oil light on engine light on,then goes off, turn key again ,engine turns over but does not fire, battery light on, seatbelt light on, oil light goes out. I have had immobiliser problems before ,normally its just dead ie wont turn engine over, take key out then put back and it starts.I am now going to find if I have a spark If so,must be fuel but on the electrical side. Any one had the relays fail, thanks

I'm no expert but it sounds relay-ish. Just in case, how's your battery? If it's the original it's getting on a bit. Do you keep it on a charger/analyser thing?

Hi all thanks for the input. I have now got the car started and it runs ok. However for all you GDI owners this is what I did. I checked for a spark(it had a good one) so took off air filter plate and took out air filter squirted some easy start in,and tried to start it, it nearly fired,so took off the intake pipe nearer the engine and squirted more easy start, this time it fired with foot right down on the accelerater as if choked, and it fired up and ran.So if any body can explain why a GDI engine can be choked when not going through the correct starting procedure I would love to know. Good job it did it at home where I have the facilities to sort it ,many thanks duncan

When the immobiliser doesn’t switch off the engine doesn't turn over.

Waiting for the fuel pump to prime allows the ecu to do whatever it does before starting the engine, so a quick key turn will prevent that system check taking place.

If it happens again, try a battery disconnect, and that should reset the system.

I've never been made aware of a starting procedure for the GDi and have never had any problem. Can you detail the starting procedure please? Ta.

Hello Fox Terrier, its just normally I would turn the key till all the dash lights come on then wait for the electrical noises to stop then I turn the key to start the engine, but this time I just turned the key right over to start without waiting, you probably do all that as a norm like I do.However this time I obviously upset her, will not do that again duncan
