I would like to thank all those Morganeers on this forum for their help and ideas just recently when I was doing my front suspension on the Plus 8.

Especially Grumpy 2 for his idea and photos of the spring compressor.

I made it as he showed and it worked very well for just enough compression to get the spring under the top frame easily.

I now have the "Mulfab" bearings and Brake Reaction Bars fitted

I have been for a short (but quick) run and found the front end has lost 90% of the "jiggle" it had when hitting bumps and undulations. It also felt stiffer with the Brake Reaction Bars.

Weird thing though, when I stripped the front suspension I found another bearing on top of the stub axle between it and the original Brass Steering Damper, then the spring on top of the Brass Damper as per normal.

Not sure of the thinking behind that, I haven't seen any sign of one in the diagrams I have been looking at so far.

Anyway, glad to get it back on the road and thanks again everyone.

This forum is the "BEST".

Happy Miles
Bryan.

Aww. Bryan, that’s very kind of you. Pleased to have been able to offer something back to the forum which has offered me so much over the last few years.

More power to your elbow my friend!

Gary

Hi Bryan, some folk find the steering so light after fitting top bearings they leave the original damper blades in as well which can mask other issues. Seems counter-intuitive to me but each to their own. It would however explain your findings.

I was quite underwhelmed when I fitted my sifab steering bearings. It was the torsion type and found little to no difference. I think the rebound spring is under quite a bit of pressure so am going to get some wolf performance torsion bearings to sit on top of the rebound spring to see if that helps.

At rest ride height, the rebound spring should not be under significant compression, but without something like the adjustable SSL system, it's a lot of trial and error to get them just 'so'

It's not that hard. Here's what I did on my first +4.
Assemble the front end without dampers and without rebound springs. On level ground settle the front end. Then measure space where the rebound spring has to fit into. Then cut/grind the rebound spring to that length. Then install the rebound springs and dampers. Job done. To be fair I do have a lift which makes things easier.
Cheers
John

If you already had upper steering bearings as with Bryan the OP, I would not expect any difference at all after fitting alternative steering bearings.

Re the lower ones offered by Cain, I've had them fitted for most of the cars life and before fitting the SSL RS kit. I noticed the improvement literally as I left his drive and retained them after fitting RS kit. I have very light but most importantly quick steering should a bend tighten unexpectedly.

Under many circumstances with a correctly set up front end (zero static pre-load on rebound spring) the bearings are under minimal/no load but in a corner as the inner wheel is unloaded they make a very noticeable difference.
