Howard,
I think you really need to go to a good dealer/service agent - say BHM or Richard Thorne if in the South, Newtown Motors if in Wales, The factory if Midlands / North or Russell Patterson if in Scotland. (Other people may have other suggestions, these are just my thoughts) Then DRIVE a selection of new and second hand cars and ASK the dealer all your questions. The above will all know and be happy to chat!

Driving the cars will make your mind up far quicker than reading the opinions of people like me!!!!! it is after all your choice!!

Cheers!

Have commented iun another thread but I can't help thinking that going from Morgan to Lotus in retirement is the wrong way round. oldgit I've had one pal, admittedly after a hip replacement, stuck half way in and half way out of mine and it took 15 mins to get him back vertical.

Mind you, the spectacle of SWMBO getting out of the car makes it all worth while. So far I have restrained myself to pushing her rump with my hands for fear that if I used my foot there might well be a serious domestic disturbance. grin2

Damper blades were used up to about 2007. A bronze thrust plate sits between the bottom of the coil spring and the top of the stub axle. Attached to the thrust plate is a shim steel extension which fits into an adjustable slot in the horizontal section of the chassis. This allows up & down movement as the shim steel flexes.
As the coil spring compresses, it will twist around the vertical plane, so the thrust plate, being fixed at the chassis end absorbs the twist, so not transferring unwanted rotation to the stub axle.
On a bumpy road the spring will twist each way as it compresses and rebounds, and without the thrust plate you would feel this as wobble through the steering wheel. When you first look at this arrangement, it's hard to see how it works.
Later cars don't have the damper blades - (they damp wobble/unwanted movement). They have steering bearings, so between the bottom of the coil spring and top of the kingpin is a conventional ball race with dust covers.
Mulfab do a conversion kit which is a very worthwhile modification. It makes the steering much lighter.

Hope that helps.

With regard to Lotus ownership in retirement, I'm presently fit, 5'8" and average weight, so don't see a problem in terms of access although I did try one for size last year and it's obviously an acquired art. MrsW may not be so keen.
But as a touring car it appears to me more practical than the Morgan in dodgy weather, but obviously I might be proved wrong. But my biggest dilemma as I've posted elsewhere, is whether to get another Morgan and have two. The temptation is massive. evil

Not sure why you would think it a better touring proposition. True my Lotus is watertight which is more than you can say about models pre about 2006, but with a rear mounted engine and 190 bhp you need to be fairly circumspect on wet roads. Comfort may be a bit better in that you have a rest for the left foot. And I suppose you can have aircon as I have. Reliability is good with the Toyota engine - I would not go near one with the K series which doesnt take kindly to being thrashed.

I have only driven a Morgan for a couple of hours and not in the rain, but there was nothing about them that made me think they would be any worse, or any better , for touring. Except possibly that they dont encourage my hooligan streak anything like as much and they arent seen by boy racers as a challenge. Thats something which becomes tiresome.

Thanks for the info on the blades.
