Hi Clemens, the weld to your luggage rack fixing point is exactly as I propose to do on our Plus Six.. I may have to put the weld off for a while as we have just returned from a week in Brittany with the Plus Six and now have a list of issues to be addressed with the car including another radiator water leak and coolant loss.. I hope its not the rad as this was replaced due to a leak several months ago.. Its hard to keep the faith with these cars when you experience so many issues.

Have the bracket additionally welded and then the weight is no longer a problem. The orginal bracket is in my opinion a misconstruction.

Hi Clemens,

Can you please tell me what was the weight of the bag that was on your rack when it broke?

Also did your dealer give you any guidance as to the weight the new bracket will carry?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

John

Hi John,
The suitcase transported on the broken bracket weighed 31 kg.
I have not received any information about a maximum weight on the additionally welded bracket.
This is now my risk. But I trust the holder now a much higher weight when I look at the previously let's say better spot-welded bracket.

That looks as if it’s retrofittable to a chassis , although we were told it could only be fitted at manufacturing. Has the chassis / bracket been re- engineered??

That looks like a simple spot weld. Simply not up to the job! Such a small area of weld is never going to last with stresses of load and vibration. The extra welding is a must. It looks like a beancounter’s spec rather than an engineer’s spec.
When I worked in a car rad factory we spot welded the tank pipes ( brass tanks) then they were high temp soldered sealing the pipe/tank joint. The spit weld was done in a jig for correct orientation and added some strength. Why high temp solder? Assembling a rad meant using a jig to position the tank on the core tube p,ate. Normal temperature solder was then used to fix and seal the tank to the core.the pipe solder wouldn’t melt at this stage, maintaining integrity.
If QA started ( correctly at the design stage as it should) then that assembly would likely be declined for a better one. What effect on reputation versus marginal better quality built in cost? An example of excessive cost cutting? On second viewing is that lug pushed through a hole in the base and then welded normally? Better than a spot weld but only just. Still not the best option though.

Thanks for the images Clemens. The coming weeks I'm not planning to undertake large trips with the Morgan, but I do have some spare time during holidays, so now I am much more determined to show my PlusFour to the dealer for inspection, they already promised to weld it if necessary, but a trip to the dealer is 400 km for me (retour) so I have to plan that on a weekday when I am free and they are able to inspect it. I now have the feeling that there is a fair chance it's only spot welded, so that means I will have to leave here there and pick her up on another day! Retirement is only in December......... smile

Ruut, taking another look I think that looks more and more like a lug pushed through a hole in the base part and then welded at the rear end to hold it. Looking from the front there appears to be a gap where the parts meet indicating a hole/slot that receives the other part. The weld at the back looks like a Mig/Tig weld rather than a spot weld. You can see the “puddle” effect where the filler wire was welded in. It would be difficult to spot weld due to the shape and thickness.
