I use a tulip contour route map prepared earlier, and partly memorised. Kept in the door pocket and checked if needed......

I have an original Tom Tom in 3D setting with the large Manual Sucker unit. In the Jag I use one of the Bean Bag 'Ash Tray' types for it to sit in the Dash where it stays put nicely. In the Mog, I use the sucker to attach it to the centre of the Left Hand Triple instrument gauge glass. I can locate it on the class so that I can still see the Fuel Gauge, trusting that the other two gauges are behaving. It is close to me due to the extended neck on the sucker unit so see it using the occasional glance and I can hear 'Herself' getting annoyed as I ignore her routing instructions. It does bounce a little on our lovely smooth roads. The cable fits neatly into the Glove Box Lighter Socket with the excess wrapped around the sucker neck. I tried using the Bean Bag sitting on the Gearbox housing but I had to take my eyes off of the road for too long to see the map

Sounds like you have already explored this and not found it works for you but I place mine right under the rear view mirror. I have a tiny Librands mirror so there is more room than with the standard factory slab. So far I have not mowed down anything, as far as I am aware, with lack of vision.

I have a Garmin but I'm sure the mounting options are similar. I use a suction mount with an arm that moves up and down. The centre of the suction mount goes exactly in the top left hand corner of your photo, with the arm pointing down in roughly the 4 o'clock position so that the sat nav doesn't completely block the glovebox opening or the speedo. -easy access to power -not in sunlight -passenger can't see speedo

Nope Bulldog: thanks, but that particular mounting solution won't work for me - not with my TomTom. The only dash-mounted options are either stuck (using the suction mount) to the lower RH corner of the glovebox lid, or else stuck to the glass of the 3-part instrument. Neither are very satisfactory, as I'm sure you'll agree! I was given a (ludicrously expensive) TomTom mounting kit at Xmas, and used the adhesive clip-in shoe to mount under the dash, in the position shown in the photo. In almost every way it's ideal - the SatNav unit just clicks into place when I want to use it, and unclicks when I want to remove it - leaving the shoe permanently in place (and out of sight). Ideal, apart, that is, from the sound issue. Think I'm going to attempt a DaveW-type solution, and fashion some sort of sound reflector out of alloy, fibre-board, or sticky-backed-plastic, to go behind the unit and bounce the sound back instead of it being lost in space in the footwells

Mount it with the suction pad on the speedo face - who uses it anyway! Not such a silly idea as all (?) Sat Navs have (arguably more accurate) speedos built in.

I mount my TomTom on the speedo too, because I look at the rev-counter in 5th - remembering which is which in the gears. Mounting it under the dash would be a problem as the gear lever is father forward.

For me, mounting the GPS below the dashboard means I have to take my eyes off the road too much to check directions. On the dash top I find it interferes with the forward vision too much.
I use RAM bits to mount the GPS via the scuttle bar. To mount to the scuttle I used a RAM-B-108B, It's mounted on the scuttle on the right hand side of the glove box, I found that this was the best location for various flavours of Smart phone, for a Tom-Tom it may be different, it is easy enough to have a play and find somewhere that suits. The arm length I went for was the B-201 (3 inches measured from centre of ball to centre of ball). For various reasons I epoxied a Brodit mounting Plate to a RAM-B-238 and then use various flavours of Brodit powered mount to suit the Smart-Phone-Of-The-Month. It all sound much more complex then it actually is. Because of the nature of the RAM system you can adjust the arms as much as 360 degrees so do not really see the need for a flexible arm and vibration is not a problem.
For the sound problem I plug the smartphone into the back of the radio.

I use maps mainly but the TOmTom is useful when near the destination in a strange location. Its mounted in centre-ish area on windscree ans powered from a socket i fitted just forward of passenger door and up under the scuttle. Power from a spare connection that is a non-permanent output i.e. only live when ignition is on. As for the voice. MMMMMMMMMM Joanna Lumley..... I love it when at journey's end.. " You have arrived at your destination, darling" I sometimes break the journey to stages to get the effect!
