I def won’t be running dry to find a base level ! My guess is that the residual unusable fuel is there to prevent a run to dry to compromise the submersed pump?
I do find it odd that this confusion exists. Surely a simple option for MMC to determine AND EXPLAIN CLEARLY.
Build a car and add increments of fuel to a bone dry tank. Find the critical volumes for zero fuel pick up to get actual unusable fuel level then add more to find the usable fuel volume to warning light. Forget about the absolute minimum to submerse the pump. Treat that as a type of priming and measure usable after that. It is 2023 after all but not a high tech test that only needs doing once. Surely it would be a pretty important stage during design/development? Ah well.....just keep the tank topped up.

I've just spent the week driving my Mrs car - first time I driven it for any distance. Despite the fact that it accelerates like a scalded cat, the driving experience was miserable. Automatic, auto handbrake, auto hold, lane assist warnings, auto wipers, auto lights, auto braking, ABS, anti skid, warnings to shut the windows, slow down for roundabouts blah blah blah. Transport for those who have given up on driving.

Can't wait to get back into my very analogue MG or Morgan and get the fun back.......

How's the MG experience so far? Are you using it daily? Would you recommend it as a daily?

We brimmed the tank yesterday 78 miles and the needle has just started to move average mpg 42.1 my son's 2 litre z4 34 to 36 mpg with the roof up. I fancy the mog changes gear down too quickly at a slight hill but then that may account for the great mpg I'm getting. Em

Used it as a daily for the last couple of months and stuck a couple of thousand mile on her on the commute and some trips out when it's been pissing down. Obvious tweaks and fettles that come with an older vehicle but she's great fun to drive. Gave a colleague a lift to pick her car up one evening and said, with the 'old car smell' it was like sitting in a museum. Getting about 30mpg so not breaking the bank (especially with no tax or MOT to worry about.

I would definitely recommend as a daily, with the caveat that you may be out there fiddling at 7pm on a school night so you can get to work in the morning! So not suitable for everyone!

Got my extended break now, so will be flushing the water system and fitting new hoses and thermostat, gerabox oil and filter change, new brake discs, calipers and lines (stupidly cheap!) and lowering the suspension a couple of inches to remove some of the wallow on corners.....

Just passed 500miles so a bit soon to be too accurate for mpg. Next toe dipper will be brim and watch the gauge then at next fill up note the mileage. First mpg calc. And compare to what the car says.
Em, I feel the auto box changing up/down more often than I would with a manual but with 8 gears that seems normal. It feels sensitive to feathering the throttle but responds well with a heavier press for overtaking etc. Not tried Sport or S+ yet as I want more feed back for normal. The first 1k check will be booked quite soon so still in “slow and steady wins the race”. One step at a time! A bit like the change from 4/4 to Plus8!

The wife's SLK 250d has 9 speed auto box and doesn't get into 9th gear till about 70mph at 1400 rpm, amazingly frugal diesel which can really move when it wants to with 370 ft lbs of torque. I use it more than my petrol SLC, other than the diesel rattle when stationary, its amazingly quiet on the move, really economical best mpg I've seen travelling 250 miles down to friends in Sunningdale mostly motorways usually at and on occasion above the speed limit and it averaged of 61.5 mpg roof down all the way.

One thing I do notice about the modern auto boxes, they do tend to seek the most economical gear for the speed and road conditions, often selecting a lower gear than I would chosen to keep the engine in its sweet spot .I often paddle shift up to a higher gear and it quietly moves back to a lower gear before you know it and I can tell from the mpg displays statistics and graph readouts, it tends to pick the most economical gear, even though that may be at higher revs than I would have selected myself. I enjoying her car so much we are thinking of moving the SLC on as it doesn't get used enough and like all Mercedes the battery goes flat within a fortnight if not used, and it cant keep up with the wife's SLK when that's being pushed hard.

Going up to Morgans at Windermere again this year then on to Scotland. A good run to get some data feedback. Mid Wales to Wrexham area then M56/M6 to the Crooklands Hotel. No plans for runs up there yet, weather will dictate. A nice mix of roads.
My initial tank filling will be erring on safety but with mileage/petrol used logged to get a better overall figure. Also a good mix of roads to learn more about car response/behaviour.
Even after only 500 miles I am impressed with the difference to the trad. Having tested a manual as well I think the auto is the way. The paddle shift, when I get round to it, will offer an alternative if needed. Wait and see.

Enjoy the new car Phill. It drives like a real sweetie in auto at normal speeds poised balanced and you feel very safe in the car. The moment your on paddles and sport plus with a heavy right foot Wow its a bloody rocket ship. Jan said if you drive it like that again you can go your own. Don't answer that Ha......

Em, Lynne hasn’t asked for Jesus Handles yet.... just a few squeals. I have pushed the pedal down to overtake and if that response is anything to go by then Sport+ = Jesus Handle territory.
