On that day here on the south coast we saw pressure fall to 736mm of Hg (981mb), just below the previous low from all the 38 years we have lived here. A pal who lives about 30 miles from Ilfracombe and who used to be an aerobatic pilot reckons that a QFE (Query Field Elevation -- the pressure at your airfield) of 981mb is "tropical storm low".
