The expansion tank fitted (from a MkI Ford Focus) has a lower section marked with a Min and Max level; so very easy to check levels.
Filled to the Max level would still leave 75% of the volume of the tank remaining empty, when cold.
No problems; other than the tank once leaking from a weak seam. (Local Ford dealer supplied a replacement tank for £23).

However my 4/4 suffers very slight and occasional incontinence from the bottom hose connection, to the Mulfab Al radiator.
A problem that I’ve never managed to completely solve.

Double jubilee clips with the tightening screw at 180 deg to each other...that'll sort it

Tried that, improved but not fully solved the problem

Have you tried the double 'wire' type hose clamps? ... the narrow round contact area can bite better than the wide, flat jubilee clip band

Ok, then remove hose, put a just a couple of turns of self amalgamating tape around the alloy outlet to fully cover the amount the hose pushes on, then refit with double clamps

Mikalor clamps are very good too https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/stainless-steel-exhaust-clamp-52-55-mm

It could be that your expansion tank is an aftermarket tank. As tanks are different sizes the best way to determine how much coolant is required for your car is to fill the radiator and the expansion tank run the car till the engine reaches normal running temperature turn off the engine and let the expansion tank burp out the excess fluid, this will then set the operating level.

Suggest tightening hose clamps with small socket not just screwdriver. Be careful though its then easy to over do it. Note also rubber hoses seal better than silicone.

It could be a crack on the inside of the hose that allows fluid to wick down the reinforcing material and seep out from the end. Tightening clips will help, but only a new hose will solve the problem, I suspect.

Peter; That’s worth checking, thanks.

The persistent leak I had on my Roadster was because the metal pipe was not perfectly round. Even twin high pressure clamps didn't stop it, but reworking the shape, and some PTFE tape fixed it eventually.
