Advice please gents.
My friend has owned his 4/4 1600 crossflow since 1969.
His stainless exhaust is rattling, he thinks it's a baffle, and he's thinking easiest is to replace it. Single box system.
Anyone recommend a good stainless system, or a maker?
Ta everso

Custom stainless silencers made to order here. No experience of the company though.

First I'd do the obvious and check the bobbins. They often look ok but a quick pull on the exhaust shows a failed joint between the bolt & the rubber

Nick, where is your friend located as most of the bespoke exhaust firms prefer to pattern and part assemble on the actual car to ensure a good fit

Thanks for your replies. Good call re the bobbins but they'd given him trouble before so were checked first. He's taking the engine and gbox out to cure a slight oil leak so is hoping to buy just the parts rather than having it fitted I think. But open to all suggestions. He's in Hampshire, like me, on the Surrey border.
Ta again, all contributions will be passed on to him.

Had one made up to original pattern by my local exhaust fabricator - cost was very reasonable £160 I think.

Whilst you are at it, consider redesigning the exhaust mounts, a 1969 car (assuming it has not been modified already) has a right angled bracket of mild steel with a single bolt.

The single bolt becomes loose over time and causes a nice star crack to radiate from the bolt hole!

Ideally, you will need two bolts arranged vertically to secure the bracket to the chassis and some sort of bolt plate (i.e. two bolts welded to a piece of steel strip at about 2 - 2.5 inch centres) on the inside to distribute the clamping force over the chassis rail.

If the rest of the stainless exhaust system is fine, it may be cost effective to have it cut open and baffles repaired or replaced by an exhaust specialist?

My Xflow has a larger manifold and early +8 silencer, Miltek renewed the innards to help flow and noise! smile

If you are thinking of replacing because of a rattle in the baffles maybe the old hammer trick would be worth a try first?
Bash a dent in the casing around where the rattle is and it will pinch the baffles and hold them tight! It's an old motorcycling trick. If it works it could save you a few bob, if you were going to replace it anyway then there is nothing to loose in trying.
