They did an extensive trial in Buckley where 70% of the residents complained that the limit was counter productive and the trucks and vans were always in the wrong gear and kicked out far too much pollution. Two councillors over rode the objections and decided that because no one had been killed during the trial it must have been a success!

The trial is still in place and the current situation is that the Sunday Lycra brigade are now over and undertaking slower moving traffic and cyclists need 1.5m clearance forcing traffic onto the wrong side of the road. Yes I did say undertaking! They will pass you on the inside thus forcing you to move into the path of oncoming traffic.

I've often wondered why I have to drive into what seems like the next county to overtake a cyclist, but they seem able to undertake me through a 2.5cm gap .......

I had one on stretch of single track road where he had to wait cycle stright at me today. I had to mount the kerb to miss the prat.

True, it is the same for the Brunels etc. No project is down to one designer or engineer. Eitherway it is a magnificent structure to cruise over in a narrow boat.There are details here of the construction in 1805.

A mile or so further down the canal is an almost as spectacular tunnel, quarter of a mile long and only wide enough for a single narrow boat and tow path.

Surely cyclists aren't legally allowed to exceed the speed limit?
Are they allowed to undertake if there's no actual cycle lane?

Rule 124 of the Highway Code sets limits for various vehicles, which MUST be complied with. Bicycles are not included. While you can’t normally be charged for speeding on a bicycle you could, in extreme cases, be charged with careless cycling (maximum fine £1,000) or dangerous cycling (max fine £2,500). Furthermore, local bye-laws can impose limits on cyclists. Bournemouth’s promenade, for example, has a speed limit of 10mph (and on some days bikes aren’t allowed there at all).

Frankly, I'd quite like to be in sufficiently good enough physical shape to exceed even the 20 mph limit on my bike. But those days are gone....

I'm really surprised that any vehicle is not under the law which is speed limit.
