Are the volunteers vetted by the scuffers then BurgundyMog?
The reason I ask is one of our locals had his driving licence revoked as his eyesight was so poor he managed to crash into a parked bus yet he's standing with his geriatric mates with a speed gun!
Not a shining example of road safety I am sure you would agree!

If this guy is part of an authorised Community Speedwatch, he will be authorised to monitor and record vehicle speed infringements by and on behalf of the local Heddlu (Police).
There are strict guidelines in place that have to be observed by the Speedwatch volunteers. For example, there should be a prominent high viz sign on display indicating that Speedwatch is in operation. This is no more a traffic distraction than an any other road sign.
He should not be authorised to approach a member of the public. However, if a member of the public were to become abusive then that could be reported to the authorising Heddlu.
No prosecution can take place based on Speedwatch observations alone.

Arwyn Not to my knowledge  Normal practice is for one person to operate the device and call out the reg and another to write down the details, but rest assured no prosecutions arise from the result just a ticking off letter. The main aim is to reduce speeding in villages where a problem is perceived usually by a councillor
