I wanted something unobtrusive when I wasn't using it (which is most of the time) but secure enough to hold my phone for directions on looong trips. I wound up with this:

I also have a usb cable snaking up under the lip that is hidden and unused most of the time but I can pull out to keep my phone charged.
In general I'm really happy with it, I just wish I could get it plain black without the logo.
