There's no rev hang issue with the 3 litre S3: that was an unfortunate feature of the early 3.7 (S4?) from 2012 I think. The MT75 gearbox's recalcitrance is somewhat overplayed IMHO (unless I'm lucky and have a particularly good one). Yes - the 'box doesn't like selecting first from cold: as already mentioned, it's often best to select 2nd at standstill and then immediately move the stick forward into 1st. When warm there are no selection difficulties whatsoever. And my VED is £395 - pricey enough - but not, perhaps, "extortionate"! A good 3 litre S3 is a wonderful thing: I don't think you'll regret it if you find one.

It gives well over 30 mpg on basic unleaded. If you'd like a drive, message me. I live in North Somerset, presumably not too far from you.

Incidentally, the road tax on Roadsters registered before 23 March 2006 id £395. After that date it rises to £675. At some time (late 2007? can't be sure) the Roadster emissions reduced so that it fell back into the £395 category. If that is relevant to your decision-making, then check the emissions of any Roadster offered for sale by entering the registration number onto the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry facility.
Hi Tony

Thanks for the info, and the offer of a drive. I must say the S1 Roadster does seem to be highly regarded, but for me I'm uneasy with the idea of going from a 3 year old Plus 4 to a car that's nearly 20 years older. Of the S2 and S3 the S3 seems favourable as the engine has more power and it has the wider track at the front, but the VED on those cars is extortionate. There's a nice pale blue S3 in Berrybrooks at present but it means going up to the 3.7 engine with £675 per annum VED!

I suppose a 3litre S3 would be ideal, but then the question of the Transit gearbox and rev hang start to come into play.

Needless to say I am still mulling it over.

Les, if you find a nice 3.7 the later ones fall under the new VED system that after 5 yrs old (in the 6th yr) flat rate tax is paid at just £180 ish

Looking forward to this but dissaponted the DVLA/government have taken such a haphazard stick your finger in the air approach to VED rates over recent years. Grossly unfair for some.

I have only experienced the 3.7 Roadster - I've had two examples, one of the first and one of the last to come out of the factory. As John V6 commented, the grin factor on this car is superb, particularly in 3rd on A and B roads. You drive the car on a wave of torque - it can be civilised or a hooligan, depending on your mood. I recommend a sports exhaust for better aural feedback - I like the Librands one which sounds very rumbly. The only downside for me is the width of the transmission tunnel which makes the driving position a little cramped. The earlier roadsters were more commodious in this respect.

The limited driver footspace with the 3.7 V6 is mitigated by the addition of extra throttle foot space provided by widening of the bulkhead to rear bonnet catch on later right hand drive models. This created an extra pocket of space for right foot. Image below illustrates.
