Smart idea, Keith. The old French dealer used to offer his trads with a package of such stuff and an extended warranty. That went a long way to finishing the cars and sorting the cars, a necessary Morgan tradition.
I also enjoy seeing the real wood stuff!

The older trads used to have steering column covers from the aftermarket. Melvyn even offered faux burl along with the polished stainless ones he still sells. But the new covers are way to large to make polished metal look suitable, even for a shiny metal nit like myself. Of course, Morgan interiors use veneers..burl very often. When my present Morgan arrived from the factory, I cut up the burl dash they delivered it and fashioned a console for my radio/sound system. In the shadows under the dash it passes for a match for the aftermarket dash I use.

These days one can buy any type of veneer one wishes, real or faux burl in any variant and the latter in peel and stick, to cover anything. Very inexpensive.

Theres been an argument spanning 13 years on this matter on one of the Jaguar forums that I frequent, here's a summary:

is it BURR WALNUT or BURL WALNUT ?

Eventually, according to Wikapedia - BURR is correct English/European terminology,
and BURL is usual USA/Canadian terminology.

So I guess if Jaguar built a car for North America (needs to be top of the line
Vanden Plas these days) you get BURL WALNUT, but if I take delivery of my new
Daimler in UK, I get BURR WALNUT, with equal logic (or lack thereoff) for new
XK120/140 DHC/FHC deliveries.

Or is the logic, which country grew the Walnut tree, from which Jaguar sourced
their Walnut veneer?

But you should also trust the Cambridge dictionary more than Wikipedia UK https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/burl

Canada follows British spelling and grammar, not American, though most of our anglo automobile terms come from the US, though not in Quebec of course. BTW, Grouping Canadians with Americans is a a semi-slight to the former, sort of like calling a Scot and Englishman. For gomog, I try to use for British terms and spelling out of respect for where the car was made. I shall use "burr" from now on, term I grew up with from January days at -30C.

But however you spell it, burl/burr is merely a term for deformed wood, walnut merely being only one of them. I wish we saw more of the other burl woods . Our interiors would be much more varied and individual.

BTW, I speak three languages, all badly, and I can get by in more languages even more poorly. As long as we can communicate, I am fine with whatever you wish.

L. (who comes from a land of many woods)

You don't see much use of Burr because the lovely 'figure' varied grain and pattern you see is because it's sourced from the really gnarly bits of the trunk, it's very difficult to work as a solid timber and a right pita to cut into thin veneers, our long gone joiners shop used the deliberately over price Burr spec work so they didn't win it

A bit late stumbling on this but what a very nice solution Richard thumbs

Yes these factory shrouds are a tad ugly so thought it might be worth posting this 50p budget fix smile

I anguished long and hard over mine when I first got the car and how to sort it. I’m useless with leather or wood so that was ruled out. So I had a plan to print a new shroud, prep the surface and experiment with dark metallic paint finishes.

But..! All that came to an abrupt halt one day when I picked up a bit of left over edging strip trim that I had kicking around and banged it on the shroud. It insantly made the thing look much nicer. For me the problem was that crude unfinished cut edge on the cheap plastic vacuum forming. It annoyed the hell out of me. Once the edge was hidden I started to warm to it and since then it hasn’t bothered me woohoo
