It turns out that rampant consumerism and the need to change our phones every 3 years on average is contributing to global warming. When this extends to mobile 5 seater "washing machines" we will probably all have to go out and buy "stillsuits"  https://voonze.com/your-cell-phone-will-only-last-three-years-and-these-are-the-reasons/E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream on the planet. 1.5 billion phones are sold every year and only 20% of them are reused or recycled. The BSE aims to make us more aware of the terrible impact that changing mobile phones every three years has on the planet (not to mention the economic impact on our pocket).
For example, simply extending the useful life of each and every smartphone in the European Union by one year would save 2.1 million tons of carbon dioxide per year until 2030, “the equivalent to taking more than a million cars off the roads”.
If we extended the useful life of the devices we use most throughout the day even further, the benefits would be even more incredible. Delaying the date of the change by another three years would mean a saving of 4.3 tons of CO2. Extending the mobile change for another five years would mean 5.5 million tons of less carbon dioxide.

Done my bit - just had new battery fitted to 4+ year old Xiaomi. Still faster than new Samsung 5G I bought  earlier this year.

It would help if the phone software companies stopped included new releases with bloated software updates, that reduce available operating memory usage to the stage when the older phone becomes almost inoperable and has to be replaced, My wife has only re-placed her phone because core software updates slowed it down and consumed more battery time.........
Whilst many will want the latest thing, not everyone needs to run their life via their phone, and more fundamental basic phones are more than sufficient. The phone manufacturers and software companies need far more regulation from an eco green prospective.......just like what is being applied to the internal combustion engine.

I'm relatively environmentally conscious on this subject, but there are also economic reasons why I don't buy a new smartphone as often as the average person. I used my iPhone SE from 2015 until a few months ago. Twice my son put in new batteries. But now it has become hopelessly slow and it doesn't get updates anymore. I used it to make calls, everything else I do with the ipad mini on the go.
I was also environmentally conscious as my new iphone 12 mini is an original apple refurbished model, so the battery and the case is new from apple the rest is used and about 25% cheaper with full warranty, the same I did with my ipad mini 6 whose predecessor I also had since 2016.

I am in the process of finding a replacement for my iPhone 4 it went into meltdown while I was in Seville last week. I will use my wifes old iPhone SE and she will buy a new one, but which one? any ideas please. it must be an iPhone .

P.s. when in Seville I watched a keystone cops robbery the perpetrator escaped on a scooter with half a dozen waiters chasing after him. all the scooters in Seville seem to be altered to go at warp speed, and there are an awful lot of them.

I think the term applicable to the above may be.. built in obsolescence... it is suggested that when the light bulb was perfected such was the design of the filament that it could last forever, thus an alternative material was saught that did not last wuite as long.. Could be an old wife's tale...? Some time back the likes of domestic appliances were seemingly built to last circa ten years, which in time was cut back to 3 years...? As ever happy to be corrected.

I was gifted an Electrolux cylinder vacuum cleaner from the 60's in 1988, which was found in a vacated council house, and "liberated". It's one of those all metal constructs with a pink ribbed casing, and a long material covered hose. The bag inside is cotton. I've used that ever since in the garage and it's sucked up most things it shouldn't have, and yet still works perfectly. I was gifted an Electrolux cylinder vacuum cleaner from the 60's in 1988. I've used that ever since in the garage and it's sucked up most things it shouldn't have, and yet still works perfectly. Ther's Yorksheer for you.

Ooohhh! ... is that the original spraygun? ... swapping the pipe to the other end made them a 'blower' as well as a 'sucker' and you could do small spraying jobs with them!

David Byrne. Nah! Buy an Android, preferably a Samsung. When you get locked into Apple they want you to think that you have no choice but to buy another Apple, and, to a degree, that is true. We have 2 (3 if you count the obsolete one) MacBooks in the house and for me they are a pain in the but. They have little flexibility (or at least what there is is not user friendly) but they are fine if you just accept what they want you to accept. I prefer the flexibility and choice of hardware offered by Windows an Android. I have my prefered suppliers but if I see something I like better I can change.
