Refining the combined knowledge of contributors to this thread, the brake drums were released from captivity yesterday. The key element was, in fact, a larger hammer.
I dug out my 'big' copper-faced Thor mallet. Rattled around the circumference to warm it up. Then smacked the pouting, circumferential lip at about 45 degs from behind, rotated and repeated. Of course, as soon as it budged on those big, slot-headed drive pegs, they were in my hand. So many thanks.
If I were nervous about repeating the experience, I would probably drill and tap two opposing holes at a circumferential distance equivalent to the centres of the pegs. The idea being to be able to screw in two bolts to push against the face of the hub and lift the drum from it. But I won't, because I know where the mallet lives.....
