Inspired by our current weather, I have started thinking about a Morgan trip for 2024 and considering Austria and the many opportunities for alpine routes. I guess there are practicalities in terms of which passes to choose and distances between for example. I’m reckoning on a 2 week trip and would be grateful for any experiences / suggestions I should consider in my planning. I’m sure there must be a wealth of experience within the group.

Worth getting a vignette for Austria once you have dates confirmed - they offer a 2 week option and it is possible to buy the in advance without paying a premium. In the high roads, you never know when you might end up on a road that requires a vignette and they are not expensive.

The Grossklockner is well worth the detour to enjoy the drive.

Just a little tip: if you're travelling up the Großglockner, it's worth spending two days in the Matrei area. It's East Tyrol and very unspoilt if you want to spend a day hiking, e.g. the Europa Panorama Trail. There is a large hunting area around Matrei and the area is famous for its delicious game dishes.

The other side of the Großglockner Pass road in Zell am See is the opposite. Very Russified, at least a few years ago, and very crowded. But maybe that's better today.

We mogged Europe, two trips a year, each for a minimum of two months for a ten year period. We did the same in NA as well, but mogging should be done differently on that continent.
We learned that it is not where you go when mogging that is important as much as how you choose to do it. Alpine travel will treat you to great vistas but will restrict your choice of great Morgan roads and force you onto divided lane Motorways, unless you have more time and a taste for adventure.

Just remembered - one of our trips that went to Austria was through the MSCC Travel Club (Scenic Car Tours) - even if group travel is not your thing it will give you some route ideas.

The question is - is it just moggong you are after or is it more?
If it is more - is it cculture, cities, landscaües, food, wine or arts?
It is such a heterogenous area that you can experiance a lot in two weeks.

Sud tirol is your. But why not try southern Bavaria as well. Eng is an Austrian village you can only reach from Bavaria. It is magical with a glacier at the end

I love Sud Tirol but then we are in Italy.

Many thanks for the responses which provide great food for thought. The points are well made regarding the objectives and consideration regarding spending excessive time driving motorways. Based on your inputs, I have refined my thoughts further and am reckoning on, finding locations where it’s possible to stay two or three days, do the passes but also enjoy the region particularly the vistas, food and nature. The Grossglockner and region seems good for this , any suggestion where I could consider others without the need for too much motorway. Will take a look at Eng to connect with also.
