I need to replace the spark plugs on my 2020 GDi (the front one is badly corroded around the ceramic). The car is currenly fitted with Ford CYFS12Y1 (original fitment), however they are not that easy to find (no doubt due to the engine being for the US market). I have been offered NGK LTR6DI-8 as an alternative - does anyone know if these will be OK or can recommend anything else?

I can't confirm if the cross ref is correct, but rest assured NGK Iridium plugs are good

I had exactly the same corrosion on number one plug about three years ago. It took a lot of removing.

As a direct consequence an aluminium engine cover was fabricated and the issue of water getting past the coil pack was cured.

My replacement plugs are Bosch Double Iridium R6 ref HR7N11332W

Scroll well down for the images, which were reposted.

I improved the cover later but it gives the basic idea.

My aluminium cover is fixed with dzus fasteners to aluminium upstand brackets for quick release. The rubber plugs for access to oil filler cap and dipstick were sourced on eBay. No issues after three and a half years in use.

The NGK LTR6DI-8 also known by code 96588 is described as a laser iridium plug suitable for Ford Focus ST250 and Focus RS 2.3. They are pre-gapped at 0.8mm with NGK heat rating of 6.

Here is a list of cross references to the Ford CYFS12Y1.

Very smart engineering Chris thumbs

Hoping that the 3.7 V6 on my Roadster doesn't suffer similar water ingress to front plugs.

Further info. Apparently the NGK laser iridium plugs as well as having a thin iridium central electrode also have a tiny platinum disc attached to the ground electrode. This would leave the LTR6DI superior to the LTR6IX. This ties in with the double iridium Bosch plugs Chris and John recommended.

Using the latest type may offer greater availability and reduced price as demand for same as replacement increases rather than seeking a perfect match for OE, given engines were likely designed 10+ years ago.

If using NGK I would check the suffix though which defines the factory gap setting. Indeed it might be worth checking gap anyway.

To muddy the waters further NGK (and likely others) are now offering Ruthenium plugs as above with this rare earth central electrode working with platinum tipped ground electrode (as shown) to give better flame spread and twice the life of iridium type doh
