I'm new to the group and a relatively new Plus 8 owner (1989 3.5).

The front callipers need some work as they are binding. The calliper is a Girling T48 type and I've looked on on the net to see if I can buy a re-build kit but to no avail. Any suggestions gratefully received. I'm based in the UK (Staffordshire)

Hi Mark, see this thread, I had Mulfab hiSpec 4 pot calipers fitted on my 4/4 in 2013, non regrets!

Regard, Ruut

Try Bigg Red, link below. Based in Worcester.

Caliper Rebuild

There have been a number of recommendations for this company and I know another Staffordshire MSCC member on this forum has used them.

Hi Mark,
Are you enjoying the car? All Morgans, bought new or used, require a sorting period..though it is less with a used one.

Yes...they were used from 1978 to June 1993. Many of them! smile Scroll down here. https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/brakehistory.html
Repair parts numbers change or emigrate to other manufacturers. From an aging memory you should google "Centric Parts 143.90002 Caliper Kit".
If there is binding, it is due to non-usage. A thorough cleaning and the kit should cure it. You could consider stainless pots as well.
You will learn a lot doing it yourself. Luddite, a participant here, is VERY hands on. And he has your system. He could guide you through it. I have only done it once many years ago.

Hi Mark,

I'm in north staffs and have had two sets of calipers rebuilt by Autoservices in Chelford. The service and the price were both good. I took the calipers to them and they took about a week to dismantle them, get them plated and rebuild them. They looked like new when finished.

Thanks all for the advice.

I normally like to do the work myself but on this occasion it may be better to send the Callipers to a specialist, such as Autoservices in Chelford. It seems the common fit for my car is Girling M16 Calliper types of which repair kis are readily available, but the T48 Repair kits return zero hits.

I think the problem is lack of use as the car didn't get used for 6 months (22/23), as I was ill. When I finally got it out, it was pulling to one side as one front brake was binding. I managed to free it off by pushing the piston in and out a few times and it's been fine over this summer. However, prior to parking the car up for the winter, I noticed that one front alloy was covered in brake dust, yet the other side was much cleaner which is indicative of unequal/binding brakes. So it's a task for the winter to get sorted.

One other question....

The front suspension seems a lot firm than the rear. Is this normal or a sign the rear shocks are tired? For info the car is a 89 +8 with 25k miles.

The shocks could be adjustable. The rear springs will also age. Lots of info here for the front & the rear

Pity. It is not a difficult job and, the cost of a kit is negligible. And as I mentioned there are those here who can guide you. It is appalling how such simple skills are being lost when needed most.
You doing it would save so many 1000s for Morgan posterity. I would write up the method for gomog.

Yes it is a common fit, same kit for many Girling calipers. [You will not find anything under "T48" Merely a casting number.
Your search would have been more productive if you had used the caliper part number or even the original kit number. (all up on gomog)
There are other companies now, (as I noted) making the correct kit you need under their numbers now. Many Morgans (1977-1993) use it. Such kits are used every day.

Correct. A bit of rust from the mild steel pots. Nothing to worry about. Should be all for now. But it will occur again with the pots you probably have.

Yes, it is normal for most Morgan trads. There a so many reasons why your Morgan is stiff and uncomfortable at the back. The original set up was anything but stellar (6
leaf springs with Armstrong hydraulic dampening. Without proper maintenance (more common than not with Morgans in this era) it will be much worse by now. Additionally,
there are many who have substituted aftermarket or later systems which make what is happening a question mark with pictures.
When I bought a 3rd +8, a 1990 to leave in the UK, I found the rear leafs had fused together with rust, making an unbearable ride before I fully restored the car. Your tyres,
their quality and age are the biggest determinant as well. All of it is fixable by yourself and there is plenty of guidance. Your choice is to use the trade, (who are finally, after
all these years of being taken advantage, are enjoying a well-deserved field day on prices, hourly rates and non-Morgan products) and pay many many pounds of use, bless
them. Or you can do it yourself and pay very little. Actually, cost is luckily not a factor, for me. I merely enjoy working on the car as much as I like driving them.
It is certainly a lot more entertaining, rewarding and fun than golf was for me.
