Have you had this work done? If not can you point me to someone who has?

I haven't had it done as mine is quiet, but Skullmog has and is pleased with the results.

I have an email into them to see if they are still doing this, but would be interested to know the overview of their process. Are there any postings here or elsewhere on line that talks about their process? I looked at their website but didn't anything related to M3W.

I have also emailed them to make enquiries. If this is an option then great, if not then I will continue to explore the Super3 bevel box. I know these still make a noise but my current box is so noisy at constant throttle inputs and worst at around 40mph which is the speed most people seem to drive!
A Super3 box can’t be worse.

every once in a while, I find there is an advantage in the fact I am losing my hearing.

As I understand it they have redesigned the gear set and modified the way in which the bearings are fitted.

Billy Bellinger is well respected in the Morgan 4 wheeler racing world, for rear axle and gearbox work amongst other things.

For what its worth heres my twopenny worth on this matter

I had a screaming bevel box but managed to make it very bearable by doing the two following things.
The screaming is a harmonic of the teeth impacts. The imperfections in the teeth surfaces are a factor in the high pitched scream.

1. I had the gears lapped, done out of the box by a specialistengineering company. Backlash setting was recomended.
This makes the wear pattern areas smoother

2. I also then had the gears Superfinished which removed even more high points.

On reassembly, using shims to get correct wear patterns and with backlash set as stated, i found the box much quieter. The screaming was 90% gone.
General noises changed to a different rpm range but all in all i was very pleased.

I am not in anyway engineering minded, and the explanations are just my musings but these things helped make driving more enjoyable.

Good to know, that was the sort of thing that I was thinking of but my knowledge is non existent.

For the M3W the bevel box noise varies from car to car from virtually silent to screaming. It's characterized by occurring in a fairly narrow speed band (or bands) typically between about 50 - 70 mph.

A first port of call to reduce the noise is to check the drivebelt tension. You should be able to twist the lower run of the belt between 45 -90 degrees and go towards the looser setting.

The BB oil has a limited effect but over time Millers EP140 has proven a good choice. For info the Redline 250 "designed for the M3W" has only worked in 1 case I'm aware of but several of us tried it and changed back to Millers straight away as it was significantly worse..

There are 2 fundamental issues, the shape of the gear teeth and the bearing mounting. The JB-Engineering fix addresses both these with a new set of gears and an improved bearing mount.

As far as I'm aware nobody has tried fitting a Super3 bevel box to a M3W so it's not guaranteed to fit and could still be noisy. .

For info, the Redline 250 Chris99 refers to is not the same as Redline Heavy Shockproof 75W/250. The Redline "Shockproof" does work well in the M3W Bevel Box and is a good choice, as is the Millers EP140.
