Count me in if it's a kit that can be shipped to the States. Its not a kit - its a complete upgraded Bevel Box which you will need to supply in first place. New gears installed with new bearings etc all built with correct pre load etc. etc.

I have been reading this thread as it evolves. Regarding the talk of a second person to trial this set up, I am somewhat surprised that neither Skullmog nor several of the other parties getting involved have mentioned that there was a second person involved. This was me and it was not a good experience that I had. Perhaps that may be why some choose to ignore it. It cost me a considerable amount both in monetary terms and more importantly anguish. In my opinion Bellinger has already had enough money as I part paid for the initial new gears alongside Skullmog. This was several thousands of pounds. So why does he now want more money for the same ? It stinks, as does my experience with the Bellingers. My suggestion is he sticks to refurbishing axles. It would take an extremely large post to document the aggro I had if I can find time one day I may just do it ! Back to the noisy bevel box, I would add I have many years experience of rebuilding/modifying vintage Morgans, other solutions are there, I am fed up of so called experts I have now gone back to using the only person I trust to work on my vehicles and that is me ! Has anyone talked to the manufacturer, Quaife , to see if they have any suggestions re lubricants, adjustments or any magic cure? I'm in the States so have no easy access, plus the box of my Super 3 is fairly quiet.

Quaife will not enter into any sort of discussion and refer you back to MMC. Quaife manufactured the M3W bevel box but the Super 3 is made by another supplier, who is unknown at the present.

Ian Parkinson I’m sorry that you had a painful time with this but wondered whether you could shed any more light on the subject. In your opinion, did the new gears and rebuilt bevel box bring about any worthwhile benefits? If it has all been done once (or twice) already then there should be valuable lessons to learn. Thanks

Being mechanically minded a lot was learnt during the multiple times my bevel box was dismantled. The box, as made by Quaife is cast from the wrong grade alloy. This alloy is not able to withstand the type of heat generated by the bevels without extreme expansion taking place. This results in the internal surfaces expanding rapidly and the bearings being sloppy in their housings which causes misalignment issues. If Quaife had been a lot more professional they could have machined the housings tighter to compensate .I believe this is why some are quiet. Clearly not all boxes are noisy so they can be made quiet ! New Bevels alone do not solve the issues. In fact new bevels alone are just as noisy as the originals in my experience. The secret is setting it all up properly. Trying to glue ( locktite) in the bearings does not work We had been taking the box out of the car ourselves, then it was suggested I drive the car to their workshop. This resulted in my M3W getting damaged by Bellinger I decided enough was enough. I sorted my Bevel box myself with machining done locally. All for a couple of hundred pounds. Skullmog and I had embarked on this project with a view to benefitting all owners, the sort of money that seems to be being asked now is just more of the Great Morgan rip off. You have a Morgan so we can charge you more. If I could turn the clock back I would strip the box, remachine the bearing housings and fit tolerance rings and set the bevel gears correctly. It is not rocket science I am just putting my 1929 Morgan 2 speeder bevels together, a similar arrangement and a doddle.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated. I don't have the skills, knowledge or equipment to do that myself but may try and make some progress myself with a local engineering company. Regards Eddie

Ian, I recall you saying to me that there was another problem with the design of the bevels, that they were exactly 2:1 ratio. Accordingly the same teeth on the crown wheel were in contact with the same pinion teeth which resulted in wear not being distributed evenly and caused the noise/whine. Was this an issue? If so, it's unlike the pre-1931 two speeders that had bevels of usually 13:33. They usually growl a little, but don't seem to get noisier as the revs increase.
