A real shame. I. Went when I was about 18 and loved it

Never been to this part of the South coast but have long been aware of the historical significance of this event.

The Motor Club noting “the Club has been running the event at a loss for a number of years” is both surprising and disappointing for an event of such standing in the motorsport world.

Where are the sponsors? Isn’t this an ideal opportunity to show off their wares and services?

What about the Council? Surely the event brings financial benefit into the City and surrounding area?

“Required safety measures, additional security and many other additional costs” smacks of the nanny state doctrine we increasing find ourselves being sucked into. If safety is an issue then limit vehicle engine size and/or power. It’s a sporting event; surely security can’t be a major issue. Or can it?

The TT and MGP manage to thrive. As does Oliver’s Mount at Scarborough. Granted, all are bike events…

Motorsport UK strikes again.

I've been on the organising committee of several road/night rallies in North Wales and the hoops that we are expected by Motorsport UK to jump through to put on an event are beyond belief!!

Agreed Arwyn .... the old school lot who fought in the war and had a realistic view of risk have all passed on and been replaced with office warriors who seem to be moving to the view that sticking to FIA rules (even for club level motorsport) reduces the risk to their carreers ... as a club level driver I've had to suck up the considerable cost of changes to helmet, harness, ROPS rules (often multiple times in close succession) that haven't been driven by any evidence in the form of harm or risk .... commonsense hands-on has been replaced with an irrationally risk averse office based rule making ... and that's before you start on their disproportionate 'diversity/protection' crusade.

The Government have put through legislation to allow closed-road competition on the mainland for the first time since the Kop incident (euro style hillclimbs, road races like in NI and IOM) .... several years down the line and apart from one or two hillclimbs restricted to lower powered classes nothing has developed ... the depressing effect of the MSUK and the threat of petty nimbyism.

Ps ... should make it clear my rant is for the policy-makers at HQ ... not the grass-roots Scrutineers, Timekeepers, Marshalls, COCs etc who work hard to make it all work at track level .... club level motorsport only exists because of them!

This is the first year that I have not renewed my Motorsport UK competition licence.

I held a Non Race National B since I was 16 and its just too expensive now. I also take a very low dose of a common antidepressant and made the mistake of declaring this on my renewal form. Motorsport UK want a £75 report from my GP. I queried this and was told it was because their insurers thought I was a danger to others.

When we were discussing putting on the event we had a whole check list to complete including child welfare officers, toilet facilities for ttransgender folk so we just thought f**k it, too much hassle.

Motorsport UK seems to work on the basis that Clubman level competitors also have access to unlimited Formula One budgets! Not much fun having to replace seats, harnesses, helmets, gloves every 5 years because Motorsport UK says we have to!!!

ah, well, the Council was Green until last year, so you could look at the investment in traffic management and cycle lanes on that strip of road, and wonder if the Green Council was bothered that they were killing off an historic event - or that they saw it as a benefit of their other changes.

That whole area needs investment - and it's beginning to happen. There's the very smart Sea Lanes swimming pool development on the beach, and work is finally starting to restore Madeira Terrace - the fabulous cast iron terraces between the beach and apartments high above.

There's, of course, been a lot of faffing, during which time the cost of things has gone up. Most notably over eliminating the roundabout at the West end of Madeira Drive, as part of a pro-cycling scheme to link the Palace Pier to the City Centre.

Sadly it never seems to have occurred to the city planners that the one bit of tarmac they really did need to improve was the strip used by the Speed Trials, and many other motoring events across the year, not least the London-Brighton Veteran Car run.
They all bring in visitors, who spend money in shops, restaurants and hotels.

Meanwhile, we are plagued by empty cycle lanes taking up road space... empty cycle racks & the latest wheeze, and Residents' Cycle Hangars located in parking spaces a few steps away from (you guessed it) empty cycle racks.
