Spring servicing time, and one task on my list was to check the condition of the coolant in the system. Time to get out the Refractometer, a tool which I rather enjoy using, but which of course rarely sees the light of day.

Coolant condition suitably assessed, the thing now gets put away, probably for 3 years. Next winter it's coolant change time, the winter afterwards experience tells me it'll still be fine, so it won't be needed until 2027 probably.

What other tools do we enjoy using but hardly ever need?

My refractometer has an SG scale for battery electrolyte as well but doubtful it will even be used for that now given adoption of sealed batteries. I suppose it would work for home brews though thinking

I have not used my ball joint splitter since we sold our SIII 88” Land-Rover in 1991. I look at it every so often but I will not part with it.

Very pleased to see you back Tim.

+1 for dwell meter and colourtune. The dwell meter was used regularly years ago to set distributors. Colourtune not so much use.
Just remembered my strobe too. Found it in a cupboard late last year whils5 tidying up in the garage.

I’ve a pop rivet gun for fixing the Caterham but now I’ve grown up a bit, I haven’t broken anything off to rivet back on.

I have an embarrassing quantity of tools, amassed over 60+ yrs, joinery, plumbing, electrical, plastering, tiling, drainage, gardening, roofing, ladders, plus a vast collection of vehicle repair stuff, I had to build a dedicated 20ft long man shed just to house part of it, I'm dreading the inevitable property downsize she wants

Anyhow, car least used tool is a specific crankshaft main oil seal inserting tool for Mini's

Other one, probably my evil looking Sheffield steel hand forged slaters 'rip'

ps, anyone remember that old tv ad when the newbie goes into a hardware store and asks the (Welsh ?) shopkeeper for a saw ?

Tim, funny you should say that as back in 1979 my Scimitar GTE fuel tank sprung a leak, so I dropped it and repaired it with that iron and a little dab of BICC Coraline Flux always worked wonders with the stick solder.

I won it from work as I used it to strip and tin Litz wire which as you probably know is notoriously tricky to do successfully, happy days in a previous life on TX Stations..
