A dial micrometer with tube inserted into a spark plug base. This was screwed into centre plug two stroke cylinder head to determine piston position btdc for setting ignition timing on contact breaker points. Used with battery and light bulb in 1970s.

I like this thread. Here's a variation: what do you reckon these tools are for ? (clue: not a Morgan....)

Here's another very infrequently used tool. Clearly an instrument, can anyone guess it's primary purpose?

Sometimes it's enough just to own such beautifully made instruments.

Google has told me it's a vintage tachometer, but that's a far as my knowledge goes!

One on ebay for £20 if anyone fancies one smile https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295936430444

I've got a whole stack of very specific tools that probably I've only used once or twice, but made the job much much easier - spring clamps. rotax engine locking tool, MT500 bearing press, MG rear brake cylinder tool, Kawasaki Fork seal tools, Land Rover hub nut spanner, AN braided hose stuff.......

That's what I last used it for TBM, measuring the idle speed of a vintage Lister JP2M diesel in my narrowboat. It mechanically counts the number of revolutions over a preset period of a few seconds then the needle freezes with a read out. Primary use was measuring lathe leadscrew speeds for thread cutting. It came with a full set of printed tables for such.

Certainly is. That's lovely, isn't it?

I just can’t bring myself to get rid of tools, some of which I’ve owned for over 50 years.
So: AF & Whitworth Socket Sets and an Imperial Micrometer, along with a selection of BA fasteners, still grace my toolbox.
