Hi,

Does anyone know if there are other replacement steering wheel bosses for my 2002 4/4, other than the Moto Lita B71 version ?

There seems to be several other options for plus 4 models, but nothing I can find for a 4/4.

I'm assuming the 2002 4/4 steering column can from some other generic car brand and model, so is there an alternative compatible boss that I can source.

Thanks in advance for the help and feedback

The B71 boss is available in narrow or wide back versions with the latter listed for your car. Note also MotoLita only seem to refer to 4/4 models for later cars so the year seems to the more important. If the narrow back version would fit (same splines I believe) then an alternative would be the B71J below which is the one I have on my Roadster.

Might be worth a chat with them.

Potts, I don't have the ref on file anymore, but I once owned a 2001 4/4 and fitted a Moto-Lita, so the correct boss is defo available

The MOMO boss for the Rover 200 series should fit.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far.

I was actually after any alternatives to the Moto-Lita bosses. The Moto-Lita bosses are expensive and I don't like the aesthetics of the wave/stacked rings design.

Plus, I'm quite tall, so struggling with visibility of the dash and my knees hitting the wheel etc., so I'm in the process of making and trying a few adjustments and I want to try a few inexpensive wheel options before committing to anything expensive (i.e. Moto-Lita)

There are some alternative plain bosses out there with both options of 6 or 9 hole steering wheel fixings, which would be ideal and give me the flexibility of multiple steering wheels to try:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184511561920?chn=ps&_ul=GB&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1NW5lRe8oTZWKEPbd-QBX_w27&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=184511561920&targetid=1816181028899&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9045743&poi=&campaignid=19090194174&mkgroupid=147009364227&rlsatarget=pla-1816181028899&abcId=9303860&merchantid=137623891&gclid=CjwKCAiAq4KuBhA6EiwArMAw1GmqmkG1d0Vgatk8aMpNR6rT4L_nhjg1tia7HJO8qm3DbRluNYHy0xoC3N4QAvD_BwE

But I cannot find anything like this which appears to be compatible with a 2002 4/4. I thought I read somewhere that Land rover bosses might be compatible, but I cannot seem to confirm this to be true. Any other help or suggestion on this would be greatly appreciated, as I seem to be drawing a blank.

@Max5, I will look into the MOMO boss, thanks.

Thanks again

Check under your seat runners Potts. You may find tapered wooden battens on that year Trad. If there are, and you remove them you'll gain aroind half an inch. But note that a protruding bolt and nut will press into the floor without a spacer.and will make seat adjustment stiff.

Also the original Mog wheel from the factory was awful, but your local dealer is likely to have a few kicking around and it would make a good basis for butchery/experimentation.

IMHO the wave design is a safety aspect.

Last year I have seen a Motolita boss after an accident (50km/h)!

I was amazed at how much the Boss was pressed together on one side like an accordion...

Agreed, I also thought the sort of bellows style of machining was to create a crumple zone in the boss

Thanks DaveW, as it happens I'm already working on this, and was just this evening applying the final coat of stain to my new lower batterns. Due to the leaf spring box protruding into the seating area, I can only get about 1/2" reduction in height, but I need all I can get!

I also plan to try an offset wheel, and I'm working on producing an adapter to try this out before committing to something like an expensive Moto-Lita 14" offset wheel. However, after clamping up the existing 14" wheel with an 1/2" offset, I'm not holding out hope that this will provide much benefit.

So my other plan is to try a 13" wheel (maybe even a 12"), and adjust the steering column before driving to the lowest position. I believe this should provide the best visbility of the dash (due to my height), and with a smaller wheel plus lower seat, I'm hoping my legs will still be able to move smile and access should be better when getting in with the column in the upper most position.

So hopefully you can see why I'm trying to find a cheap alternative boss, so that I can try out various options.

Thanks for all your input.

@bmgermany, that is a very good point and something I hadn't considered.

However, I still need to investigate and try a few options to see what works best before I'm happy to commit to an expensive Moto-lita option.

So if anyone has suggestions for alternative 2002 4/4 compatible steering bosses, then please shout.
