The terminals depicted are to be soldered and all the advice given I endorse. Good luck.

This might be more convenient (but possibly less reliable) than soldering if you want the unit to be easily removable.

I always crimp and solder those terminals.

Once lost a top three spot in a rally, when one of those terminals failed due to an ineffective crimp....

Kind regards

Don’t forget shrinkwrap. Especially where connections are exposed to water etc. Also a handy extra insulation where connections are close together or might touch.

I have always thought of that type of crimp connector as a system for amateurs. Proffesional crimp systems are quite different however it appears that pre-insulated terminals are becomming more common. I much prefer the uninsulated terminals that you can easily adda a touch of solder if you wish. They are then insulated with a slip over insulator and/or if necessary some heat shrink.

a quick search found this kit on the US Amazon site but there are plenty of variations.

As to the original question about soldering irons I use a relatively low cost kit with a variable temperature for all my work on PCBs. I am not a great expert when it comes to soldering but I do manage to (usually) achieve fairly neat results. I occassionally think that I should treat myself to a better kit but I feel that whilst good tools may make a difference technique is equally important. Perhaps i should keep an eye open for a good second hand professional soldering station.

That's a nice set but not currently available from Amazon in the UK - but they do have something similar: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SOMELINE%C2%AE-Connector-0-25-2-5mm%C2%B2-Non-Insulated-Terminals/dp/B0BZ49GH6D/ref=asc_df_B0BZ49GH6D.

Those coloured are not only for amateures we used to use them on all our panel work when I had a day job. I still use them on my cars.

However like all crimp systems they are subject to a few conditions.
1, You have to have the correct sized crimp for the size of cable you are using.
2, You have to have the correct ratchet crimpimg tool to make them off.
3, You are using good quality crimps and not fakes.
I only buy my crimps from a couple of particular suppliers. I have in the past bought some from auto jumbles and found that they can be just pulled off the cable without any effort.
YMMV
Cheers
John.

I agree wholeheartedly John. Particularly with the last sentence. Point 1. is also perhaps one of the most important too. Often the incorrect size is used and I would suspect that this is the most common cause of failures.

All of the above apply also to the uninsulated terminals with the added advantage that you can visually inspect the result and give it a touch of solder if there are any doubts. When it comes to connecting multiple wires I prefer something like these:

I have a good ratcheting crimping tool that makes easy work of it.

I still prefer to solder and then sleeve over, that way you can check visually for a good flow and know you have a robust high conductivity joint, I've seen no end of classics with hidden internal corrosion within crimped joints

I always solder but I'm untidy with it.

Also a big fan of shrink wrap.

Tenuous link......I tried lead loading when I did my B rebuild, but I could only do it on horizontal panels. Vertical panels were way beyond me.
